I made a round pen from electric fencing (not live) for my old pony and had no problems, HOWEVER new pony jumps, runs through ect and would never stay in it

Ideas for cheap but effective round pens?

The metal mesh panels builders use around building sites would work, not sure what the proper name for them is though

Or, even cheaper, can you get hold of stuff in the UK that is like material but woven out of synthetic plasticy fibres? We use it for shading, as screening on mesh fencing etc. There is also a type that they use here on the cow barns to cut the wind, like stiff, thick mosquito netting made from nylon/fibreglass. I suggested it for my friend's electric tape round pen as she had the same problem and it worked a treat because it looked solid to the horse.

Failing that, strawbales two high.

Yep this is what my pen is made from, mine's about 12/13 panels - although my dad is a builder so I got mine for free.

With all due respect (and much envy of you people with builders' fencing), if you make a roundpen out of fence posts and electric tape it is usually because it is a cheap and easy and quick way to do it. Buying metal fencing is not going to be cheap (seems to be around £40 a panel including a block to seat it in) or easy to erect and dismantle by one person.

Ilovequeenbex - you could also use that orange plastic net stuff they use round roadworks, which is about £25 for 50 metres, you'd need to go round twice to get both the height required and give the illusion of solidity, so probably two rolls for a 15m diameter pen.

Please be careful with these fencing sections from building yards. A horse belonging to a friend of mine got a bad cut just above the coronary band when it put its foot under the edge of one of those panels.

It cut an artery, and the horse nearly bled to death over night.

These panels need to have any protruding wires cut off along the bottom to prevent accidents like that.

The stuff that I believe ChicoMio is referring to is called Debris netting

The metal builders panels are called Heras panels

Both come up on ebay
