We had planned to go to Royal Leisure on Sunday for the BN and Disco, but on sunday evening decided we couldn't be ar$ed to get up early so stayed in bed an extra hour and went for the Disco and then see how we felt about the 1m Am qualifier.
Although we weren't hanging around, we still ended up being later than planned and only arrived as they were walking the course ! More alarmingly the lorry park was half empty so instructions were sent to OH to get Trike tacked up while I walked the course and did my entries. Trikey needs plenty of warm-up as he does get stiff on the lorry, and so at first things were quite frantic !
Anyway, we started to settle and he was going reasonably well in the warm-up if a little stiff on the right rein. He's always worse on this side and yesterday it was a bit more noticeable than normal.
We were last in to jump, what looked like a fairly straight-forward track, and lots of left-rein turns which suited us
We started off, and he had a little bit of a spook at the first but jumped it okay, then round nicely over the next few fences. We were starting to go quite nicely (in a Trike sort of way
), until we came round to number 7, an oxer off a dogleg, when he inexplicably broke into trot a couple of strides out. So, being Trike (and stoopid
) he ploughed on over and took the back rail off
The next fence was a double coming off the right rein past the entrance, and again he broke into trot a few strides out. This time I was able to circle him and come again. He nearly broke again but jumped through, and onto the last which he jumped okay.
We ended up with 8 faults which was a little frustrating as he hadn't jumped badly apart from two silly bits. We decided that as he didn't seem too happy on the right that there was little point in jumping the next class so called it a day. He also seemed a little unhappy in his mouth so maybe some investigations required in that department too.
Bo came over for the ride too, and we gave him a half hour in the warm-up between classes which I think he enjoyed
He even popped a x-pole a couple of times....the first fence he's jumped since doing his tendon 2 months ago. The good news is he seems to be fine on it now, but we'll still take it very carefully and not start jumping 'properly' for another couple of weeks or so.
For those interested in seeing it (it ain't pretty !), here's the link to Trike's round :-
