We had planned to go to Royal Leisure on Sunday for the BN and Disco, but on sunday evening decided we couldn't be ar$ed to get up early so stayed in bed an extra hour and went for the Disco and then see how we felt about the 1m Am qualifier.

Although we weren't hanging around, we still ended up being later than planned and only arrived as they were walking the course ! More alarmingly the lorry park was half empty so instructions were sent to OH to get Trike tacked up while I walked the course and did my entries. Trikey needs plenty of warm-up as he does get stiff on the lorry, and so at first things were quite frantic !

Anyway, we started to settle and he was going reasonably well in the warm-up if a little stiff on the right rein. He's always worse on this side and yesterday it was a bit more noticeable than normal.

We were last in to jump, what looked like a fairly straight-forward track, and lots of left-rein turns which suited us
tongue.gif

We started off, and he had a little bit of a spook at the first but jumped it okay, then round nicely over the next few fences. We were starting to go quite nicely (in a Trike sort of way
tongue.gif
), until we came round to number 7, an oxer off a dogleg, when he inexplicably broke into trot a couple of strides out. So, being Trike (and stoopid
grin.gif
) he ploughed on over and took the back rail off
shocked.gif
The next fence was a double coming off the right rein past the entrance, and again he broke into trot a few strides out. This time I was able to circle him and come again. He nearly broke again but jumped through, and onto the last which he jumped okay.

We ended up with 8 faults which was a little frustrating as he hadn't jumped badly apart from two silly bits. We decided that as he didn't seem too happy on the right that there was little point in jumping the next class so called it a day. He also seemed a little unhappy in his mouth so maybe some investigations required in that department too.

Bo came over for the ride too, and we gave him a half hour in the warm-up between classes which I think he enjoyed
grin.gif
He even popped a x-pole a couple of times....the first fence he's jumped since doing his tendon 2 months ago. The good news is he seems to be fine on it now, but we'll still take it very carefully and not start jumping 'properly' for another couple of weeks or so.

For those interested in seeing it (it ain't pretty !), here's the link to Trike's round :-

SHOCKING!!! not getting up in the morning
tongue.gif

Well it definitely looks like Trikey boy does have some issues on the right rein and did look stiff/not as happy towards the end of the course.
He started off great
smile.gif
and you were just unlucky having the back rail down on the oxer.

Good news about Bo
smile.gif
bet he loved being back on the lorry
smile.gif

Good luck with the investigations, perhaps he just requires a bit of an MOT - winnies feeling like he requires a massage/physio now too.

Alas, it's beyond an MOT
frown.gif
A lot of his problems stem from a sticky stifle on the right side, which he will always have, and which will prevent him from ever reaching his full potential
frown.gif
Some days are better than other, and I have to say the bad days are getting fewer and farther between, but he will never be 100%. The important thing is to keep him happy, and as he does enjoy his jumping then we will try to continue at this low level.

It'll be good to have Bo back though....Trike tries his heart out but just can't always do it
tongue.gif

Well done, vid is not that bad, he jumps well to start and just looks like he runs out of steam, he did really try over the oxer where he had the back pole, not bad from trot.
Well done
grin.gif

Awww, Trikey looked tired at the end. He couldnt wait to walk!! It was a shame about the trotting - he really looked difficult to get going forward - I think you did the right thing to circle. Well done.

What a shame but well done to jump from trot
grin.gif

My old mare had stifle problems before I had her and I found lots of work, especially road work kept her sound and warm up with long, low outline with lots of canter off her back.
I'm at RL tomorrow, hope I feel more motivated than I do now.

That's very interesting to hear, and very similar to what we find with Trike. The more work the better basically ! He had a light week last week due to xmas party commitments etc, so perhaps wasn't at his best as a result.

Good luck tomorrow...and let us know how you get on
smile.gif

What a fab jump he has, he "hovers" with his front end! Definitely looks stiff though, but agree re the stifle, I had an old loan horse who was dodgy through his stifle, but was alot better when in hard work. Suppose it is just trial and error. Pleased to hear Bo is on the mend!

Just looked at the video, and talk about bring back memories! I used to jump my big horse at Royal leisure about 10 years ago and they had those target fillers there then lol
smile.gif

Nice horse btw!

We think he's quite a character...despite hi sproblems
wink.gif

Have you got any piccies of you jumping there !? Would be great to see......I love going through the old vids I have
tongue.gif

I had a fantastic video of us jumping there outside but accidentally taped over it
frown.gif
I think my friend has a copy, so I will ask her to borrow it and take a copy off that.

I have some lovely pictures of us jumping at Pyecombe and Hickstead that I could possibly scan and put on here
smile.gif
one day!

Yay ! Go for it....

I have hours of footage from Hickstead and Pyecombe when I was a youngster ! It's mostly pretty ugly, but I still look back on it with pride....just to say I was there

Were you about in 1996? Thats when I used to do 'proper' showjumping!

LOL!

No, i'd given up for about 9 years by then
wink.gif
I was jumping at Hickstead in the late 80's...in the days when Apollo, Deister and Ryan's Son were at the top
wink.gif
Milton was but a baby, and Leslie McNaught still rode for Britain

My big horse Rocky was fantastic, I really regret selling him. He was jumping BN and Discovery's when he was 4. And that was before they made them smaller and BN was 1Metre and Disco's were 1.05M.
He was easily jumping Newcomers at 1.10m as a 5 yr old and at the time I didn't appreciate what a marvelous horse he really was and sold him
frown.gif

its funny tho that now I really can't be bothered with jumping and love Dressage

I know what you mean ! The last horse i had before i quit was jumping NC's at 5 and Fox / 1.25m's at 6 ! Thing is I was young, and wanted to be jumping 1.40's......didn't really understand how long it took to produce a youngster then
frown.gif

The reason I sold him was that he was 17 hands and I am only 5ft 3 ! He was 1/4 Shire and very much a mans horse. I sold him to a man who field mastered with the Surrey Union Hunt who made me an offer I couldn't refuse
frown.gif

On the plus side he was in the Marlborough Cup Hunt Relay team 3 years running and jumped clear every time!
Last thing I heard was he was sold to America for £35,000

Oh i have only just seen this for some reason

Agree with the others that he looks better in the first part than the second part but he is still giving the jumps plenty of room and its a better result than last week so you have to see that as an improvement.

I never had any problems with him keep braking into trot so i dont know what to suggest, with me it was more getting him there but once he was there he was fine.

I was going to suggest carrying a whip as that used to make him better but i see you had one. What about giving him a quick flick everytime he brakes into trot?? My old instructor also always told me to try and pick him up again if i felt him about to go into trot but sometimes thats easier said than done, especially round a course as your concentrating more on that.

Its hard with Trike as he is not a stupid as he looks and even though he has got his problems and thats a lot to do with it i sometimes think he uses it to his advantage.

Do you school him with a schooling whip at home?? Does he brake into trot at home??

Can you jump courses at home?? This is something i did with him in the summer and it seemed to help him a lot at comps.

You're doing all the right things with him anyway and as you already know its trial and error with him. He might be better when the warmer weather is here as hopefully he wont stiffen as much and he will be out in the field longer etc.

He won and came second last weekend (only at our local yard show

)....Think we've lost a couple of weeks somewhere lol!

No, this his new 'thing'...he's been working on it for a couple of weeks

Yep, that's pretty much how we do it at home too

You are SO right there. He is a crafty lil so and so and knows exactly how to get out of doing things he can't be bothered with lol!

Yes we do, and he tries it sometimes. He does still get a little green in the ring though....so much to look at and all that

Yeah, we jump at home at least once a week. It's his reward for being good

Awwww...thanks
smile.gif
The warmer weather will help too, as will the ability to get out of the school and into the woods a bit more.

Sam rode him in a lesson last night, which I saw the end of, and I have to say he was going amazingly well when I arrived ! I had to do a double take as I thought she was riding Bo the way he was going on the flat !

He's getting better, and fitter all the time though. We'll never 'fix' his physical problems, but hopefully one day he'll grow out of his cheekyness
tongue.gif
He's like a petulant child sometimes, or perhaps a sulky teenager lol!

Oh well done thats a great result
laugh.gif
Sorry i think we have lost a few weeks, the last i remember was when you came unstuck in a double (cant remember what show though).

It sounds like the boxing him up may be the problem then like you said as this obvioulsy stiffens him up which has a knock on effect. Isn't there anything that he could wear in the box that might help?? I haven't got a clue what though ha ha Or soemthing you could give him the night before??

I'm sure you will think of something and your doing all the things that i would of tried so i will just shut up and let you get on with it LOL

Hopefully one day he may grown out of his stiffle problems as some of them do and that will be half your problem sorted. That could be wishful thinking though as we know Trike likes to keep everyone on their toes
