RSPCA calls Grand National deaths of Synchronised and According to Pete "totally unac

And the comment about not being a very good herd animal if it didn't get up and run if it was being chased... Suggests that race horses run races out of fear what I find completely ridiculous!

No surprise there then:o

I wish they were so vocal about some of the more obvious cases of abuse and neglect that they do nothing about.....:o

The word jumping and bandwagon spring to mind......:o

This. How many horses suffer because of their inaction? No respect for them.

Am I missing something here? I find the acceptance and justification by a lot of members on here of the deaths that occurred quite shocking. Have we lost the ability to be horrified by completely unneccessary deaths in the name of sport? How can anyone justify the deaths of two horses on one day in a race in the name of sport with a lot of baying greedy people putting money on whether they will finish. I am disgusted at the forum members who pooh pooh all this as bunny hugging nonsense andbefore I get gunned down by the usual suspects who say lots of horses die in other sports, blah blah, that does not justify what has happened today and in past events. This should now be stopped. It is all about money, not about the horses welfare. shame on you who condone this, you are supposed to be horse lovers.
Quite right

FGS - Horses RUN because that is what is imprinted into their genetic make up, keep up with the herd or die ... not because its a "fun" thing to do.

Tell me if you put a hundered show jumpers in a field of jumps how many would run round and practice ?

RSPCA have had a hand in making the race less safe by constantly lobbying for the fences to be lowered. This causes more speed, which in turn makes a fatality more likely.

I sometimes wonder about their knowledge of horses, I saw a TV programme where the inspector had no idea how to deal with a colicking horse & was putting his own life in danger most unnecessarily.

Agree totally.

Agree totally.
We are not necessarily horrified/surprised, we were hoping for no deaths or serious injuries, but this did not happen.
I know people who have been killed in car accidents, it is not something I would have expected, but it happened.
I understand you think that that there should be no racing, but if that were to happen, it would go underground, or abroad, and not be regulated properly, so we have to accept that it will continue, as will road accidents.

Loving the inaccurate reporting and people banging on about Synchronised's second fall (what second fall?????), idiots.

Out of interest, who gives the go-ahead to PTS? Do owners or trainers have to be contacted for permission or do they sign a waiver before the race that the attending vet decides?

When a horse is entered in a race, there is always a trainers representative on course, this may be the trainer or a groom, I assume this person will be called to the stewards room, but as far as I am aware any vet can put down any animal which is suffering, not withstanding whether it is racing or involved in a RTA.

I would respect them more if they where making statements about horses like that poor little eleven month old on dragon driving as well.

I think that comes from this video:

Is it Synchronised or falls/stumbles at 2:45 - right at the back horse with big white blaze.

I haven't had any dealings with the RSPCA myself so can't comment.

Gingerwitch...... regardless of wether you support/hate racing... How many wild horses do you know/seen that would willingly wear a bridle and saddle have a metal bit put in their mouth, allow us humans to mount and dash round the forest on hacks, beaches, sponsered rides etc etc etc..the list is endless...but we all ride horses for "our entertainment" no matter in what sphere or how uncompetitive you may be....

they have all been conditioned to do what we want, even if you never ride your horse.
Every horse that gets killed on the roads hacking out, has died for our entertainment......

nuff said.

I'm not sure what the answer is with the Grand National! The race is a 'national treasure', it is the one race where people come together, have a flutter once a year and don't think about it the rest of the time. There is obviously something wrong, there seem to be more deaths than in the days when the jumps were much bigger and more dangerous and, it seems, that not a year goes by without one or more horses being either killed or PTS due to injuries sustained. Perhaps it is the speed as posted by an expert (perhaps we should listen to those who really know what they are talking about). I cannot see the race being banned and think it would be a shame if it was BUT also think something has to be done to make casualties less likely. I have great sympathy for the owners of those killed this year, it must be heartbreaking for them.

Yes it is, he stumbles on landing, he didn't fall like everybody seemes to think he did, he just hopped off, poor lad.

But if you look carefully at the video you can see his leg is broken before the fence. He is galloping on 3 legs and obviously only has one hind leg to use to take off from. it is surprising that he makes the other side as well as he does.

I totally agree as a supposed nation of horse lovers we should be ashamed that yet again there have been more deaths in this race! Without a doubt each year lovely horses are garanteed to die - no other Sport would allow this to happen - It has to STOP it has nothing to do with the course being easier or how many vets are there - there are TOO MANY horses in the race....I urge all those who love horses to campaign for this race to be banned asp.

Can you please set-out the grounds and arguements for your campaign for this race to be banned? Who you will be lobbying? Your case studies? Which experts you will be using that may support your case?

With back-up, non-emotive and solid well reasoned points so that people can decide whether they wish to join your campaign.

Thanks.

Where in life do you rule line on risks? Footballers having heart attacks on pitch, horses dying earning their living, driving cars? As sad as these losses are horses will break legs in fields can't wrap everything in cotton wool they wouldn't even of been bred if it wasn't for racing.

Really? Without a doubt? Guaranteed? What about two years ago?

There are a great number of us who work in the horse industry dealing with Sport Competition Horses and Training who feel very strongly about this and we are trying to get support group together but firstly we will target Equestrian Press and already started with Radio interest. I know many epole who race and work in the industry and I think many of them feel too that the time has come for action to be taken.

Please HUMANS have that choice Horses don't and no doubt if racing drivers started dieing there would be an out cry (as indeed there was) a weak agruement ....
