I brought a premier equine trio rug buster set with all liners etc last autumn was about £260 but thought was worth it. have had 2 clips break on tail strap and small tear on liners and inside main rug which horse has not done as it on inside. It now seems it has been rubbing her withers and it has got quite bad. speaking to my physio it seems this could be a reason for her bad behavior, her withers are quite bony and defined but she is not underweight just Tb withers with WB body. her withers now have white dust on them so have cleaned off and no hair left so put cream on and removed rug, she doesnt want it back on. the seam on the neck sits higher up her neck than her withers but some seem to say it could be weight of the rug or just that it rubs. she has prev had Weatherbeeta rugs and been fine.

I dont know if i need to look for fur wither pad on rug now or what rug to replace this with. not that impressed as the rug was expensive.

what does everyone else use? needs to be thick 1600den with removal neck and somethign she can keep on in stable.

Interestingly, a couple of us noticed recently that all the horses with PE rugs have had their manes rubbed down really badly. I almost bought some last year, and am now very glad that I didn't and stuck with my Weatherbeetas. I love the PE rugs, but I wouldn't get one.

this is right at the base of her mane, no actual mane has been rubbed but her withers are sore. it has got to their point that she is like a raging mare when it has been on and she has had the rug off for 24 hrs and she is chilled nice horse again.

Well that answers your question doesn't it? The rug obviously doesn't suit your horse, so get it cleaned & repaired, and on EBay. Buy a Weatherbeeta, as you haven't had problems before with them.

My lad is the same. But generally more so if has liners in not just outer.
I thought about fur pad but thought would put more pressure. I am now thinking of coming up with some kind of padding either side of whiters eg a sponge or even sheepwool. I was thinking of getting a vest and putting it on that so as not to have to do to every layer of rug.
Any suggestions for this?
His happens no matter what rug.

rubbed our old lad REALLY badly too, will never buy another!

Rubbed Fig too - whilst he is v thin skinned, he's been absolutely fine with his new weatherbeeta orican freestyle. That has a removable neck and the seam is set low with a special padded bit on the wither inc sheepskin that lifts it up off the neck. He's had no rubs since and his mane is growing back :) Cheaper too!!!!!

For the record, the linings on all our PE's went too.

My boy's rug (not a PE) has rubbed his wither for the first time ever this year too. I wondered if it's because he's spent a lot more time in his lightweight and it's getting wet and heavy. He's normally only in it for a week or two as a transition from middleweight to naked but with this year's very changeable and wet weather it's been about 6 weeks. I've had to bite the bullet and chuck him out rugless despite the weather.

To help with rug rubs I bought a chest vest for my tb with sensitive withers, and sewed on either side of the withers, to the vest some extra soft padding, this now lifts rugs off her withers acts like a wither relief pad... It works really well too.
I did once have a heavy weight rug 400 g fill that even rubbed big lad with his flat withers and back, I think it was a PE. I sold it on eBay.
