Hoping somebody can help me either find a correctly fitting rug brand or explain how best to alter the ones I already have for my mare.
She was in quite poor condition when I first had her, and since then she's put on a fair bit of weight and has gone up a rug size, so now I've been looking to get her a new wardrobe. I have a couple that are the right size in the length, but none of them seem to fit properly.

Diagram of what's going on with the fit:

Rugdiagram.jpg

The blue line is showing where the rug is pulling tight, basically from the top of her bum to the top chest buckle. In front of the blue line to the wither pad is quite loose and baggy. The wither pad looks to me to be too high on her neck (the red line shows where I think it should be on the diagram).
Front to back though it is the right length for her.

The rugs I had for her before fitted badly in this way too but I thought it was just down to her not being in a very good shape.

The rug that I used to try this out is a Shires Typhoon no fill, so maybe someone could recommend me a rug brand that is cut differently that might fit a bit better? Or how can I alter my rugs to make them fit properly?

She's a cob mare with quite broad shoulders, and with a fairly high wither.

Any help much appreciated :)

So you need a rug with a generous cut out for the neck and if possible, a back seam.

I think that you need something like Schneider's Big Fella rug. You can get Schneider rugs from the Arabian Emporium. I'm sure that they would order you the Big Fella style when they do their next order.

The other option would be to look at The Big Horse Shop.

Bucas and Amigo do big necked/XL styles. Dominick might have done (super rugs and really shaped over the back) but they are really hard to get hold of.

ETA. Dominick rug.

Maybe a combo would fit her better? I find the neck on them helps them stay forward so they don't slip back and pull in the wrong places. Maybe you need to go up another size still?

I had similar with 15.2 BF & outdoor rugs.
Found the LW Masta (in a 6ft 3), MW Weatherbeeta in a 6ft 6 and Premier Equine Buster Trio (6ft 6) all did a good job on a deep barrelled burd with a bit of a wither :)

For indoors we had a Mark Todd MW in a 6ft 3, otherwise used the outdoor rugs....

Faracat - Thank you, I'll have a look on those sites now :) I was thinking maybe a back seam would be helpful for getting it to sit right, as without one there's no shaping at all on her back. That dominick rug looks lovely, I'll try to find one of them maybe.

Irishbabygirl - She doesn't like combo's, she ends up shredding the neck if I put her in one. I'll try going up a size, my boy wears the next size up so I've got plenty for her to try on - would be great if they both wore the same size, she could share my boy's extensive wardrobe!

It would be perfect if going up a size solves the problem. :)

I *think* she's 6ft - that's what I measured her as but I'll try her tomorrow in my boy's 6'3" and see how that looks.

I would :)

15.2 BF's Weatherbeeta 6ft 6 was lobbed onto Giant Fuzzy (18hh substantial Selle Francais) in a hurry when his one leaked & I was amazed it fitted him spot on! He's usually in 7ft to 7ft 6 rugs depending on make/type.....

Right, update:

I measured her again, she came up as 68" from centre chest to where the rug should end. She's definitely NOT 5'9" as that's what I had on her before and it was very tight on her and needed a chest expander. The 6ft rug I had on her next was the one I was saying about being pulled tight/shaped wrong last night.

So tonight I tried one of my boys 6'3"s on her tonight and that seemed to fit a bit better. It was slightly low on her tail but it didn't have the weird pulled/baggy bit on her back. I think that might be the answer then, and it'll also be super convenient if they can share rugs a bit :D

You can also buy a piece that fits to the front of rug making it much more roomy across chest. Much cheaper than new rug. Can't remember where I got mine but sure you'll find on internet.

:)

ShadowFlame, that's interesting, I'll try one of those next then. I love shires rugs for my boy, he's a tb and they always seem to fit him really well, but my mare is a totally different shape so that's probably a contributing factor too.
