As I'm going for third time lucky for the big house move , we will need to seriously start to think about being ruthless with the amount of tackroom hoarding we have done for the past nearly 13 years o_O:eek::eek:.

Lots of little Doodle's rugs have seen better days (the downside of not being a rug destroyer means you never get new rugs lol), and Skylla appears *glances round nervously* to have stopped growing so she can probably have some nicer rugs than the odds and sods I collected whilst she was a wee llama-yak. Mum, well she has a serious rug habit and Topaz used to be a destroyer, so I'm sure she will also be happy to replace some of the holey ones Topaz is still being forced to wear.

So if I were to throw away, re-home, potentially burn* the sad excuses of rugs we currently have what would you recommend to replace them with? I'm thinking their turnouts are the most dejected ones to start with, and I'm quite taken with these new fangled liner systems, however the prices :oops::oops::oops:!

I've seen an Amigo set that sounded great (50g, 100g and 300g) but has a funny disc/velcro contraption closure system which doesn't sound robust for parting with nearly £200...

Rambo's obviously have a great write up but are ££££££

I have seen Eileen Douglas version that might be ok for Doodle (only 600 denier) that's very reasonable, but not sure what the fit/ quality would be like?

Anybody got any suggestions, if I'm going to be radical and spend lots of money I want to make a good choice. Fit wise they all seem to suit the Amigo/ Mio/ Rambo/ Masta, and I prefer the surcingle type front closure as it seems to suit them better. Topaz is the widest chest, but Doodle is tinier than a tiny thing so different brands might be needed, oh and Topaz and Skylla are 6'3" and Doodle a 6' (or if they are roomy a 5'9").

So over to you HHO shoppers I know you like a challenge.

*joke I wouldn't actually, but some do look like they could stand up on their own and limp away...

I have all PE rugs - they're the only ones long enough not to look like mini skirts on the heffalumps. They have the surcingle style fastenings at the front so could be worth a look. If you sign up to their daily emails you can get some good discounts too. I know some don't like the weight of them but I rate them.

I have the liners and there are benefits to them. As they're both the same size, with some clever rug and liner purchases, I can make everything from 0g to 400g in 100g increments (so the equivalent of 10 rugs) for 2 horses with 5 rugs and 2 liners! You could also do it with 4 rugs and 3 liners but I already had a 400g rug! Might be worth considering for Skylla and Topaz. This helps massively with storage as well as costs. I can give you the list of the combinations if you like but it's boring if you're not going to do it! It also gives you a bit of flexibility if a rug breaks as you can throw a lightweight with a liner on them so it saves the need for spares.

There is a downside (it's minor but it drives me nuts) and that is that while the liners attach to the rugs at the neck and the back, they don't at the chest, they do up separately so you always have two sets of buckles to undo at the front. If you can find a system that attaches to the rugs at the chest I'd get those, especially if, like me, you suffer with circulation issues and get numb fingers in cold weather.

I like the PE system that my 13.2 connie has, its a 100g rug, with 100, 200 and 300 liners, and two neck covers.

The liner is slightly too low cut at the front for perfection, but I guess it has to be low, otherwise it will stick out above the outer rug and get wet.

Easy to attach and v secure

I love the liner system but found with the Rambos I didn’t use the liner it came with very often as it’s heavy weight. What I have done is purchased the light weight rhino which is a lot cheaper and use the liners in them , works out so much cheaper but still quality rugs

Not thought of PE as I've never had one, will go and investigate if I need a second mortgage for them :p. Nor had I thought about cheaper liners in a more expensive outer! See this is why you need to ask HHO, great ideas!

I have an Amigo rug and liner for my Appy girl, and an Amigo rug and a Premier Equine liner for my Connie (fits the Amigo rug really well). Both turnouts are 250g, but I think if I bought new rugs again I would go 100g or no fill rugs and buy a couple more liners in different weights. The liners are so easy to clean and I can just chuck them in my washing machine, and lightweight rugs can go in the washing machine and are easier to stitch up when damaged, the 250g rugs are not so easy to deal with though.

I have the Maxima for my mare. They only do a 100g liner, unfortunately, but the TOs come in a variety of weights. I have the liner, a 1200 denier no-fill turnout w/ detachable neck, and a 200g Aldi stable rug that fits underneath beautifully. However, they're very roomy in the neck and chest, so perfect for my chunk of a cob, but probably not so much for Doodle. They're generously sized overall - bigger than my 6'3" Weatherbeeta fleece but a hair smaller than the 6'6" Aldi.

They're also very reasonably priced - £70 for the TO and £30 for the liner.

I looked at the rambo duo and the falpro, but ended up going with the falpro as my current rhino looks like a miniskirt on billy.
I do have the bucas select HW but no liners, but even that isn't very deep on him. If I had the money would probably go bucas select LW and add liners, but they don't have as much changes, liners only come in 150 and 300.

PE get very heavy so that was always a no. The falpro ones seem very good quality, and outer is 100g, then comes with liners 100g,200g,300g and 2 detachable necks for £250 which thought wasn't bad value really for 4 rugs.

Often, buying then separately rather than as a 'system' can work out cheaper - or at the very least an spread the cost as you can buy what you need when you need it.

Ok so, is the general consensus that most liners will fit most of the outers designed to use with liners?

I'm leaning more to having a few of the lighter weight liners (100g/ 150g + 200g) so I can have less rugs but can make the weight of rug needed, rather than have the heavier liners as none of mine really need much more than 300g.

So I could have 2x outers in 6'3" and then a good old mix and match of liners to suit the two Hackney hippos, maybe start with 2x 100g and a 200g liner (Topaz is so warm she very rarely gets out of medium weight rugs even fully clipped in the snow...).

Love my ancient Falpro stable rug that I acquired somewhere along the way, but never used Bucas (similar to PE in that cost has always put me off), though I've only ever heard good things about Bucas rugs and CDJ used them so they must be good ;).

Bucas select. they fit so beautifully around the shoulders and front in particular. no rubbing at all!

o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O HOW MUCH per rug !

Ok to add I do need my deposit money to actually buy the next house :p and I'm buying for 2/3 horses here! Thought the 150g silky feel quilt does sound lovely .

Where did you find it for £250, I can only see it for £315, but it does sound good!

I would only ever buy rambos these days :) I've bought most of mine second hand.
I wouldn't actually buy a duo if looking now, they have 150g fill in the outer iirc. I would buy a 0g supreme or original turnout, then you have spring and autumn showers covered. And then add a 100g and 200g liner for most things. Mine are warm ponies, I rarely want more than 200g outdoors but you can always throw the outer over a stable rug if need be. One turnout rug does everything then, which makes the ££ seem a bit less painful.

My 0g rambos have NEVER let me down, they last a lifetime and the newest ones have sensible velcro-on surcingle attachments so if you have a horse that likes to remove straps, you can quickly attach it again with no fuss. For info the supreme necks velcro on in a similar way to the duo and premier equine. The original has little tabs which are not compatible with those others.
I find the supplied necks can be a bit on the small side, i have 6'3 horses and I buy the necks that come with the 6'6 rugs.

I have the falpro goodwood system and am really pleased with it. I would say fit is similar to her amigo. It comes with everything you could need and if you keep an eye out they often have 20% off which is what I did (pretty sure I got my in their black Friday sale which will be end of the month)

Also I had a problem with the stitching when it was less that a year old. I sent them pictures and they collected it and replaced it without much hassle which was great. Also I only sent back the out rug and they sent me the whole lot again so I have 6 liners and 4 neck covers :)

I bought them over time as and when I needed each weight! Took me about 4/5 months to build up my collection. I'm doing a bit of searching to find some okay prices, not sure what sizes you're wanting but...

Here's the turnout outer layer:

Turnout neck cover:

300g quilt:

And they do 'big neck' options too for our broader shouldered/bigger necked friends! I think they stock those on that website also.

PLEASE don't delete this post for advertising, oh HHO gods, I really am not being paid anything to promote these rugs (bloomin should be though). I'm just trying to be helpful!!

Hmm, I think I might let the Black Friday Gods decided between Rambo, Bucas or Falpro then ;), see what bargains can be found!

RO thank you, I'm after 6'3" for the two hackneys and 6' for little Doodle, not sure I'd need the big neck versions as even Topaz isn't that wide lol.

Also if people can comment how the necks come up, (thanks MP) as I hate short necks that don't actually cover the whole neck!

AlexHyde, the bucas necks come up plenty long enough. Chilli is all neck and no body :p and they cover her fantastically. Really easy to whip on and off too when putting her in the stable as she only wears a neck turned out. Chilli's a 6'0 and I'm pretty sure she wears a size M neck. I'd maybe get a large if they have long necks or you just want to be safe making sure they're covered. :)

My two have the following between them.
2x lightweight turnouts
1x 100g turnout
1x 200g turnout
1x 400g turnout
1x 100g liner
1x200g liner.

These can make 2 x 0g
2 x 100g (the 100g on its own and a 0g with a 100g liner)
3 x 200g (200g on its own; 100g +100g liner; 0g + 200g liner) This provides a spare as they spend more time in 200g than any other weight.
2 x 300g (200g+100g liner and 100g+200g liner)
2 x 400g (400g on its own or 200g+200g liner) Only done this once for about 5 days when we had a really cold snap a few years ago. We already had the 400g or would have just bought a 300g liner to go with the 100g rug which would be cheaper.

Flip I bought it for 255 last week off their own website! Must have been on offer then! I'd keep an eye on it, maybe check facebook page for any discounts coming.

Thanks thought there was a secret place you knew of ;), fingers crossed for some black friday bargains then!!

I have got the Falpro system for both of mine and pretty happy with it but have a look at the Bucas Power Turnout, I will go back to that next time. You have to buy the neck separately but one rug covers -10 degrees to +16 degrees so you don't have to keep playing around with liners. The one rug has a massive cold/heat range that you don't have to change anything the majority of the time.
My old boy really feels the cold and it is excellent for him.
They also do a Power Turnout Extra which covers -25 degrees to +13 degrees.

What is dont like about liner systems is that the outter has shoulder darts but the liners dont and they rub my boys shoulders.
Though i have found that wb do liners with shoulder darts.

I have them in Big Horse Shop rugs.

I have a lightweight PE Buster (its really heavy i dont like it!) and some random unbranded liner that i brought years ago for my gelding and i have my mare in a Rhinegold lightweight with a PE liner (they wear different sized rugs) because it was on offer ... they all look the same and pretty much fit the same. Buy some double ended clips to attach at the back. Works a treat.

Im just about to sort out all my medium and heavyweights and get rid of them because i really dont need more than a rain sheet, lightweight and a couple of different gram liners and i certainly dont need stable rugs so its all going.

I hate PE rugs I'd never buy another far too heavy.
I have rhinos and acquired a 100g rambo duo with liners second hand :p. I have never and will likely never use the 300g liner that came with it.
The v-neck system that they have fits both of ours well.
I find the rambo a bit more generous than the rhino (in the same size his bum pokes out the back of the rhino.
Rambo/rhino neck covers are wider than they used to be, they go to ears when stood but obviously shorten up when eating. I do actually prefer the PE neck covers as bought a couple of them for about £7 each at one point when the rhinos really were too skinny for a cob.

Another fan of the Bucas select here, 2 no fill outer rugs, 2 neck covers, a neck liner, 150g liner and 300g liner and I am set for all weathers. They are hard wearing and fit well, and I can't see that I will have to replace them any time soon. I have built my collection up over time, and I definitely think it is worth investing in turnouts that last. I don't spend a lot on stable rugs/fleeces etc. but the turnouts really have to perform in my book.

If I was going to start from scratch I'd get a bucas power, they're like magic. As it is I've been very happy with my rambo set but the new fal pro are nice as well. I'm another who won't touch pe, far too heavy when wet and they take an age to dry so they ended up going back on the horse damp but good luck lifting it on.

All four of mine - dainty Welsh B, ISH, Gypsy Cob, and Gypsy x Sec D - wear Shires rugs, and I've yet to come across a horse they don't fit. They have a handy liner system to boot, which is why mine usually spend their days looking like a Shires advert.

I recently bought a fal-pro 0g with 2x100g liners which I reckon will get me through everything the weather can throw at me. It's a beautiful rug, although I haven't used a liner yet (warm horse). My only criticism is it's narrow round the shoulders but doesn't seem to rub. I've had weatherbeeta before which I also love, last year I bought a masta which had the most fiddly way of adding in the liner and wasn't very robust, got several holes in it.
