Rug question - cleaning/re-proofing

It is that time of year again where I have to pick up my rugs from the big heap on the floor and get them cleaned for the winter

Sounds an obvious question, but when you have your TO rugs cleaned do you always have them re-proofed

My TOs were new last year so definitely dont leak, but I have always assumed cleaning them would take away some proofing.

Now I am skint if I can avoid having them re-proofed then I will

I am prpbalby a bit fanatical. If they are cleaned I get them proofed.

Unfourtuanlty for me I have 3 that need to be repaired, cleand, and re-proffed

I had thought of trying to do it myself, but I am a wimp so quickly abandoned that idea

I am like you, I ALWAYS get them re-proofed if I get them cleaned

I shall put them in one by one, he wont need the HW for a while definitely

I have huge dusty heap too.

I wouldn't skimp on the reproofing tbh, i've made that mistake in the past and really regretted in when getting in completely soaked horse. I think cleaning does take off the proofing so its worth the extra 6 pounds or whatever if you can afford it

Good idaea. Although when I did it myslef, only did it along the seems? seemed to be fine, but easier just to do it all in one

if they were new last year i wouldnt bother washing or anything tbh, looks like were gonna quickly be back into using them which mean they will be brown and stinkly before you know it. You can de-hair them by hand or use and under rug to keep insides clean.
i dont see the point when your skint if they dont really need doing

But they are muddy and dusty

I need to try and sort myself out some proper rug racks for them really, there arent any spare racks at my new yard and I find it a bit difficult to assess how dirty the rugs really are when they are all dumped on the floor

Quite honestly, if your rugs are only a year old, I wouldn't have them cleaned at all. Any cleaning will make them less waterproof, whether or not you have them re-proofed. I would save your money. I don't have mine done any more, and my horse doesn't complain at all.

I wouldnt bother either. Get them out in the fresh air and give them a good whack to get dust out and maybe scrub with a dandy brush to get worst of the mud off. I spent a whole day pressure washing my rugs this year and they didnt look any different. If I suspect they are leaking or need to repaired or look like they are uncomfortable I will send them for washing / reproofing properly next year. I do however hand/spot wash the silky bits around the chest and on full necks as and when otherwise they have a tendency to rub due to grease.

I clean my own rugs

I stick them in a tub of water to soak for a couple of days then transfer it to a tub of clean water and tread it up and down (like treading grapes). Clear a bit of concrete and spread rug out, put some soap on the manky bits and scrub with a broom. Hose off then put into tub of clean water and tread it again then hang up to dry

Works a treat, is v cheap and burn loads of calories

I run a rug washing business, new rugs dont usually need re-proofing after a first time wash but thereafter I would recommend that you do have them done. I only use quality products, i.e Nikwax and NuuMed, if you use domestic wash powder on turnouts you will remove the proofing that they receive at the Factory when they are made. Be careful jet washing dirty rugs as all you are doing is washing the dirt into the fabric which may damage them. Hope this helps

I do this too

Has the whole yard in stitches when I'm treading them

Haven't had a rug reproofed in about 3 years and haven't ever sent a stable rug off - waste of money!

Splotchy - If they were new, I'd just stick them on a gate or similar and use a sponge/brush to wash the grease off the inside, and brush off the dust. By the time they've been worn once, it won't make any difference whether they were professionally cleaned or not

Thanks for the advice everyone, it has made me realise that I dont need to pay out for them to be cleaned, so I just need to sort out proper rug storage now - will chat to my YO

Your welcome. Sorry Milliepops, cant agree with you about Stable rugs, some of them smell like pigs have been wearing them when I get them to wash and can just about stand up by themselves! I have revived many a rug much to the owners amazement, they had forgotten what colour they were! At £7 for a wash, (more than 1 wash if they are really bad) I dont think thats over the top and they are always returned in a way in which I would like mine to be returned to me.

For somewhere to hang rugs I'd really recommend the cheap rails from Robinsons.

I looked at the sets of 3 or 4 arms from different places that were around £70 and then found these single ones
I have the single swinging ones in a spare stable for all my rugs

Might get 2 of the single bar ones for next to their doors.

As for cleaning rugs - I made my mum buy a large washing machine!! Fits all stable rugs and l/w t/o rugs in

Just the h/w turnouts I will have to do by hand

Wow thank you so much M&D, money is so tight now and I was thinking that I would have to pay for my own rug rails (not fair to ask the YO to supply them when everyone else has got their own!) so was wondering where to get them
