I've been veru un organised this year and am only now sorting out rug washing, so do you all wash rugs every year like me, or do some do every other year like some people on my yard, both my lads are clipped right out so the number of rugs they have is rather large, oppinions please??

I wash every year and my local launderette takes rugs! Certainly wont be going there with any clothes but it's a godsend as they only chrge £4 a cycle and it gets them REALLY clean, no soap residue and if you buy the reproofer, you just bung that in with your TO rugs as well - smashing!!

I only wash them if they need it. Turnouts get done each year as they are proper mud monsters and get mud all inside too! Stable rugs only get done if they are greasy inside. They are often stabled with a fleece under a thinner stable rug as I can bung the fleece in the washing machine, then wash the stable rug less often. I don't wash stable rugs if they get mucky on the outside as my grey mare sleeps in her muck - I would be washing it every week and I would wear the rug away!

wow, Kittykatcat, that sounds amazing!!! wish I could find somewhere like that.

I wash mine every year, partly because my mum won't let me store them at home if they're dirty and I don't want to keep all the winter rugs at the yard over the summer and also because by the end of winter they are really greasy on the insid (I don't care if they're dirty on the outside, I would just hose them off but I don't like the grease).

I just paid £70 for 5 (but that includes reproofing and repairs where necessary) at my local tackshop. I don't think it's too bad.

send ours to a rug washing lady down the road-£10 a time. i cant do them and hubby no time and i cant stand dirty rugs at the beginning of the season.

Wash my stable yards regularly as my lovely boy is filthy and likes nothing better than lieing in pee.
Found out recently that the local launderette will let us take our rugs there so will do that - at my last yard we used to sneak to the launderette when the attendent wasn't there.

Turnouts I just brush the mud off and leave until they need reproofing.

I'm a cheapskate :D so I wash my own stable rugs by hand, scrub the grease off the inside of my turnouts and wipe the mud off when I pack them away for the summer. I only use rugs with shiny lining (Rambo, mostly) so it's really easy, cheap and very satisfying!

I don't like getting my turnouts washed anyway as it seems to damage the waterproofing.

my mum has a big washing machine so she does all my stable rugs, and then have my h/w and m/w turnouts washed and proofed at saddlers for only £10, my l/w turnouts never get to dirty so there only washed every other year or so

Oh dear, I must be something of an oddity . . . . Only one of mine wears rugs (in winter); she normally lives out 24/7 but last winter she did come in at night during December and January. Her turn-out rugs are professionally washed once a fortnight and the stable rugs were washed when they needed it or once a week depending on which came first . . . . I can't stand skanky stuff!

I tend to just buy news ones rather than having them repaired and washed, lazy I know but for price it costs to have the all washed, reproofed and odd repairs, I could get a couple of new ones, so I do that instead. :o

My OH bought me a horsey washing machine, one of those monster top loading things they have in the states. Its very basic , hot wash ,not so hot wash! but I wash stable rugs whenever the sun is shineing in the winter (for drying) and turouts once or twice a year. means I can do horses in my work clothes if I'm in a hurry and not go to the yard stinking. Oh and I did tell him I loved him loads!!!!
