Uno has one heavy weight Masta stable rug on, with the neck cover peeled back because otherwise, he sweats!! What's that all about?

He has his head, neck and belly clipped off, but still keeps toasty. It's got to minus 5 in the NW...thinking he might be part native...even though he is on the TB side of warmblood!

My old horse had to wear about 50 million rugs to keep warm...

maybe its not as breathable as it should be, some rugs do tend to make them sweat, might be worth looking into or trying another rug or rug combinations to see if there is any difference, last thing you want is your horse breaking into hot sweats but then catching a chill if its not wicked away, might be better off having a a couple of thin layers instead.

Yip they are all different my current horse in unclipped and wearing 600g worth of rugs and she is still not that warm while my previous horse was fully clipped and was too hot in anything heavier that 300g.

Horses, like humans, vary in how much they feel the cold. A HW is clearly too warm for your horse, so best get him a MW. Wearing a too-warm rug is not good for him.

My mare is not clipped at all this winter, but she is in a summer sheet, heavy weight Masta stable rug and a Witney blanket - simply because she was cold in anything less! I dont believe in leaving a horse to shiver simply because it is unclipped and shouldnt need a rug - if it's cold, rug it up. Likewise, if it's too warm, take a rug off - dont worry about it being out of the ordinary!

He clearly doesn't need a heavyweight.

I would put try a lighter weight rug to make him more comfy..
My tb is living out in a mediumweight atm and is just about right. My natives are naked.

I said he sweats with the neck cover on, not with it peeled back. So he's fine, just wondered about other horses...and what they wear in winter.

My foal (7months weaned) is wearing a highneck weatherbeeta rug with 2 thin rugs underneath (we intend hitting the shows next spring) and he is snug... his mum has a horseware insulator rug, with a amigo thick high neck rug on top she is also bandaged of a night and is unclipped Mum is KWPN her foal KWPN x Westphalian... the neck covers go up or down depending on weather and when we had the snow here added another rug....If it goes milder then remove a rug..

both of mine are in layered rugs...so they both have a lightweight with neck and then a medium weight (no neck) on top of that. the TB isn't clipped and Vandi has a blanket clip. if the TB was clipped he'd need 500 rugs to keep him warm

no need to jump on the OP guys, she was only asking what other people have on...not asking for a critique....

horses with good thermostats are cheaper to keep

= less rugs, but then less excuses to buy them.

Mine has a high blanket clip and wont see more than one rug all winter and he doesnt do necks, they dont fit!

Have my Warmblood TBX in a Rambo Super Plus with 420grm fill and he is still not really toasty but cant get anything warmer and not too keen on the idea of layers as I find they tend to rub!! Roll on the Spring..

i agree re. the rubbing but i use a bib to stop that, layers really are warmer- lots of thin ones are much better than one thick one

Horses can keep themselves much warmer than we think they can, and as long as they have enough to eat, they will be warm. Also, just like people, some are warmer than others.

My hunter clipped IDxTB has only been in a 110g full neck with a light MW over the top in even the coldest of weathers. He is baking in anything more.

Have to agree with all of the above our Youngster never wore anything and cooked if we rugged him, Scrumps however is only just warm enough now - toasty if you like - and if he isnt he stands at the gate until you get him in....

well mine would be cold in anything less...and this includes my 4 year old who lived out with no rug on for the first 4 years of his life. incidentally he also looked like a teddy bear- now he has a fine coat and is clipped he needs extra rugs...i don't think horses should be overwarm but they should be warm- if they don't have a natural coat to do this then its cruel not to put a rug on....

My welsh x arab pony lives out and has two mw combo rugs on. He has a trace clip.

I found two lighter rugs seem to keep him warmer than a HW.

My TB who is not clipped and who comes in at night is in a HW with a extra light stable rug underneath. He gets very cold in this sort of weather. This has changed as he has got older - a few years ago he was just in a MW with no neck in the winter and was fine, but for the past 2 winters he has started to feel cold much quicker.

It all depends on the horse. When I had my Welsh D, he was hunter clipped all winter and only needed a MW rug even in the worst weather as he was generally a "hot" horse. Whereas my TB x is far woosier and needs warmer rugs.
