Rugging overnight at the moment?

Wish I had a thermometer really cos it does seem very chilly the last few nights, but obviously it has been warm during the day so might not be as bad as it seems

I am really wanting to resist bringing him in at night for as long as possible

mine havent got rugs on and are not having them - they are both fat ol' heffers and can burn their fat to keep warm - they are stabled overnight and if its constant rain they stay in so the cold they can deal with.

My TB has a light weight (no fill) on at night, he has been since I bathed him at the weekend. He is out 24/7 getting fed once a day, he won't have a heavier rug on until he is clipped.

The ponies are rugless at the moment getting very hairy, as soon as they are clipped they will be rugged.

Cowbag has a LW turn out on, but she is 29 so feels the cold that little bit more and her field is very exposed. Hoping to not be bringing in overnight for another month at least.

Last Sat it was blowing a hoolie and horse had come back from a hard lesson, so he got a LW (no fill) on overnight. This week it is ridiculously warm for September and he has no rug on and certainly won't get one on this week judging by the weather forecast. Yes, it is a bit chillier, but not properly cold, and the weather is amazingly good - really dry - so no chance he'll get rugged yet. So that LW was the one rug he's had near him since Spring and I can't see myself needing to rug any time soon.

QR-

I'm prob further north than most (Shetland). My horse- mostly tb- lives out and is only rugged with a rain sheet (no fill) if it's consistent rain showers and has had a 70g or 100g (with a neck cover) on this past couple of nights as we have had gale force winds and showers but normally naked unless during days of persistent showers during summer.

Our average summer temps are 13-17C daytime and anything between 7-11C overnight. Not allowing for windchill...

My rule of thumb (give or take) is below 10C, he gets 100g (neck if its wet); below 5C, 200C, likewise neck cover; below 3C- 300g and below freezing or winter gales 350-450g depending on weather. He is unclipped throughout and comes in at night in the winter. i never worry that he's too cold but frequently that he feels too hot. He's a very good doer and would rather be out than in. He has access to shelter when out.

Always difficult to tell how this compares to most who are further south and who experience higher summer temperatures.

I can tell you - we have a weather station in the garden with the monitor in the kitchen, and tonight it is 13.3 degrees. Of course that's in the city, so it's probably a degree or so colder at the yard and at your yard, but still too warm for rugs!

You should never feel silly for rugging up if weather getting wet or cold!

Its nothing to do with being a softy (I definately ain't!!) - but it's a simple fact that if the animal not using energy to stay warm they'll do better on less feed. (though if they're fat, and hairy, and not prone to rain scald then I have no mercy!)

mine are in at night with lightweight stable rugs on (about 6oz i think) they aren't too warm when i get to farm at 5.30am- they are 'just right'

My TB (very very thin skinned!!) is in a LW (no fill) day and night, she is never too hot or sweaty when i get to the yard, she stays in if its raining heavily.... but this is because when i got her she had bad rainscald that has finally healed and the scars are gettin smaller

No rugs at night just yet - boy is stabled in old converted barn which keeps in the heat big style (you can feel in when you walk in).

Wears an 'unfilled' turnout whilst it's been so wet, but he was too warm when he came in tonight after the lovely weather we have had today in the NW. Supposed to be gorgeous tomorrow and the weekend!

Are your horses moulting yet???

My ISH is still out naked at night or LW no fill turnout if raining. She's a bit obese so has plenty to keep her warm at the mo

Maybe I am weird and hardcore (I am from Sweden!) and also fairly old (I had horses before Thermatex was invented) - but SF gelding who is having 6 months off work and is out overnight is NAKED and IDxTB mare who competes and trains hard and is out during the day and in at night is NAKED - not even a rug when wet after work - just makes her dry more slowly. They live in Essex, near London, and it certainly isn't cold here - I don't understand why anyone round this way would rug??

mine has a MW on as she gets really cold, with a lightweight n he ears are stone cold and she looks tucked up. Shes putting condition on so don't want her to use feed on keeping warm. When I get there shes toasty..

can't be bothered with the on,off,on,off thing really........all out nice and tubby, exercised daily and don't even think bout rugging till well into October.

Same here.

No rugs for any of them yet!

Will give Blue a full clip in about 2 weeks time probably and then i will probably put a lw or possible mw on him overnight...

My tb had a MW on for a few nights and has been coming in during the day because he is way too fat (not being worked at mo because I can't ride due to illness). Last night I left him naked because I didn't realise it was as chilly, and now I feel awful. So tonight he will be rugged, he never gets too hot and I don't get it wrong that often. Although he is too fat so I guess he could do with burning a few calories keeping warm lol!

he still has a lovely fine summer coat too

both horses are out during the day with LW's on (no fill - just keeps them dry if it does rain) and my shettie is naked, both horses come in at night and have fleeces on - shetland stays out still naked.
