The cheapest option would probably be to sew bumpers into the rugs or onto a bib to be used with his existing rugs, to lift the rug off the wither.

I have a TB with v high wither and he has never had special rugs (got him aged 5, is now 26). I just made sure his rugs were well fitting around the shoulder.

I was thinking this too - OP make sure there is plenty of room round the shoulders or they will pull on the top of his neck and wither. My cob has very wide shoulders and because I am a cheapskate I just have two of these chest extenders - one buckle fastening and one toggle fastening (not sure what that's really called). About £10 each and they mean that more or less any rug can be made to fit him better. Might be helpful to you.

my horse is quite slim, so i dont think it needs adjusting to be bigger?

I have a 17hh, very narrow, VERY shark-fin withered horse, near as damn it TB, 19y/o. He has never needed fancy rugs, but I do prefer to buy 2nd hand decent rugs - FAL-Pro Cheltenham are great if you can get them , so are Rambo Duo.

I get mine off ebay generally, either lightly used or previous season rugs! Never had any issues with rubs/sores from weatherbeeta, rambo or Premier equine rugs on my TBs

how do you mean?
I’ve done this. Mine doesn’t have very high withers but started to have the hair rubbed off the top of his withers.
I bought 2 car wash sponges, positioned them either side of the withers and sewed them to the rug lining so it lifts the rug off his withers.
It was a bit fiddly, I used some rug lining from and old trashed rug to make a pocket to sew them into.
The funny thing is he now looks a bit like Quasimodo when he wears the rug.

anyone heard of them? i was looking at the weatherbeeta horse rug with a half neck, which apparently is good for wither relief. so looked into cheaper options of a half neck turnout rug. anyone heard of the brand? also is the half neck good for high withered tbs? thanks

I really like the Horseware rugs with the V closure at the front, I find it relieves the pressure at the wither so would go for that if you find some in your price range, otherwise I use Amigos without the V closure and they work well too but the V closure is a big plus particularly if the rug is a bit heavier weight.

can i ask, in the summer will it make him hotter under a fly rug?
Like anything depends how hot it is. As a fly rug is much thinner material could you not just sew 2 sponges either side of the wither, and save the rhinegold for thicker rugs more difficult to sew

i think we have decided to go with premier equine rugs now. they are quite pricey, but his comfort is the main thing. we was told he doesnt need a fly rug, is that true?

does my horse actually need fly rugs, mask, boots etc. i was told he doesnt need any fly gear apart from spray. but i see loads of horses wearing fly rugs and masks. does he need them? he does get bitten but not much now he gets fly spray. he is a bay, so i dont know if a fly rug would help keep him cool???

Only you know what the flies are like where you are, and you'll see how your horse copes. I'd have a fly mask at least though - I hate seeing flies clustered around horses eyes (they can cause irritation, infection etc)

Agree with above re. Fly mask. If your horse doesn’t have a long forelock, then I’d pop a mask on just to stop them getting bothered around the eyes.
I don’t use fly rugs with mine, as they would most likely trash them or get hooked up on the hedges! But some do get particularly bothered by flies and do better with rugs on.

Agree it's best to wait and see what you actually need- re masks, one of mine has to be in a mask all summer from the moment the flies appear, as they are incredibly attracted to his eyes and will give him conjunctivitis if he's without his mask for just a day. The others aren't so magnetic to flies, so only wear a mask in the worst of the fly season, or a fringe if they won't keep the mask on. None of mine wear fly rugs, but they don't react much to bites. If he has shade, I wouldn't worry too much about keeping him cool- they are usually sensible enough to know when they should seek shade.

Premier equine didn't work for my narrow high withered mare, it rubbed along her flank area. Whatever brand you get, I would advise to buy only one rug and see if it works well for you after a few months of use.
In order of preference for me would Horseware, then Shires then Weatherbeeta. Weatherbeeta being I think the toughest but the fit not being as good as the others for a narrow high withered horse.

Ive always used ones with ears - flies in ears cant be any nicer than flies in eyes! And I prefer ones that have raised areas over the eyes (beekeeper style).

I have just popped fly masks on two of mine, one in particular is a black fly magnet on her head 🤷‍♀️
I do have fly rugs for one pony but have managed without so far this year, just need to keep repellent topped up regularly on her

They do have ears on

Mine have just got masks on at the moment as I think the get too hot in the fly rugs when it’s this warm. They are covered in fly spray instead.

I pop masks on when/if they get weepy eyes from the flies or it's particularly bright and there's no shade as we have no shelter.
Otherwise they just get them off and get rubs so I leave it off.

They do get fed garlic though and always have fly spray on.
