i think we have decided to go with premier equine rugs now. they are quite pricey, but his comfort is the main thing. we was told he doesnt need a fly rug, is that true?
Might be worth checking out posts on this forum. I'm sure I've read on here somewhere the PE rugs are quite heavy which could make rubbing more likely. Don't own one myself, so can't comment personally.
Regards fly rug, you can see how it goes. Alot can depend how bad the flies are where he is kept, and whether he gets very agitated with them, or bitten badly. Is there any shelter for him to get away from them in the field, or could you bring him in for a portion of the day to give him a break. If he doesn't appear to be particularly affected by them, then no he doesn't need one.

Minimal approach here; citronella spray and fly masks if it’s still, though field is on a hillside, so usually enough breeze to ensure flies can’t land.

Horses don’t seem at all reactive to fly bites so no fly rugs here- the one summer I did use one years ago, a mosquito got under it and made a real mess of the horse and the rug soon got trashed, so I’d only consider it again if medically necessary.

No boots, all barefoot. Keeping it simple!

I use fly masks if the flies are particularly numerous. Bought a fly rug without a neck for one of the bigger horses as necks seem to rub the mane and had to take it off as flies seemed to be gathering inside the top of the rug. Out at night now with out rug but will put mask on when needed.

I have rugs and masks, but only put them on when it's particularly bad, so days with no breeze mainly. I generally tend to offer them daily, if they put their heads down into the mask being offered it goes on, if they show no interest, it doesn't.
