As title really. 14 hh Welsh C being clipped next week. Looking for a turnout rug that doesn’t rub shoulders. Are the rugs with the shoulder gusset set high up better?

I've found the silky (actually nylon, but still slippery) anri-rub vests helpful- mine sometimes gets a slight rub if he's clipped, but with the vest he's fine.

Well the people who replied that they’ve never had a rug rub are very lucky. However that doesn’t help me. I am specifically asking about fit on a Welsh C. He has a wide front. I know I need to find the rug that fits him (tried Shires,Weatherbeta, Rhinegold, Mark Todd, Whitaker) & probably a few others that I can’t remember. Any Welsh D/C owners on here ? What turnout rugs do you recommend?

I’ve got a broad ID and the only rug I’ve found which has rubbed is a Derby House one. Could it be that any brand would rub regardless due to sensitivity and that something like a bib will help

There are various 'levels' of rugs within each brand.
I've found the better Weatherbeeta and Shires are fine on a wide chested native, but not so with their lower entry level rugs. Likewise Amigo are not a good fit, but Rambo are, same company but different cut & quality.
Def worth checking out.

I love the Laqnsdown Thermelite rugs - they sit so much better than a Thermatex.

OP it would be worth looking at Lansdown turnouts

I had a Thermelite, 3 stable and 3 turnout rugs/neck covers. Nothing else fitted my boy, pictured here when in his worst shape after injury - massive shoulders and little neck, everything pulled back on him except these, though they were made with a smaller neck opening for me, hopefully they still can do custom if you need it. They used to be 100% Thinsulate which made them extremely breathable and therefore more versatile in terms of air temperatures, but also super lightweight. They are now part Thinsulate so should be lighter than most rugs.

I have bought a few new rugs in the last year (Swish, Horsewear, Weatherbeeta, PE, Derby House) the best fitting on my mare is the Horsewear Bravo.

This is the exact rug, doesn’t rub and she wears it 24/7. It doesn’t have gussets but she is a chunky ISH with large shoulders and there is plenty of room. The second IMO would be the Weatherbeeta. My Welsh D also fitted the Horsewear rugs nicely.

The PE is just so heavy. Won’t buy one again. Like someone else said, they all fit different shapes better.

Yes, but it's a separate neck cover, will always be priced differently to an integral, much more versatile. I only had two rugs (though one was a fixed lining, they don't do them any more) one weight of liner, one unlined neck cover and one lined, and he was fully clipped, got him through 4 winters with nothing else.

I found shires highlanders with the shoulder gusset a much better fit. We go down a size for these. Or weatherbeeta on my big shouldered 15.1 cob. Horseware don't fit her and rub. Though I haven't tried their xl range.

having seen many horses with shoulder rubs and wither rubs and then realised it was because all the rugs were the same size for big or small i realised why mine never rubbed and basically it was because they were the correct size for the horse simples really

I've been impressed with Ruggles on my broad and pointy shouldered mare. She managed to get shoulder rugs in most brands as she's an odd shape.

I find the higher quality amigo + Ruggles seem to cover most of my needs between them.

My boy is exactly the same and shires, amigo etc rubbed him, would look like fitted till he’d walked a couple of mins then would slip back and squish his shoulders. I have tried every brand ( most sent back ) but swish work really well for him and the rambo duo but that’s ££££££ I managed to pick one up on sale.

The Amigo Bravo with the disc has been a good fit on my PRE mare. She currently has a no fill one, and I’ve just bought the 50g version of it.

My Welsh is in amigo/horse ware as anything else rubbed. No issues since. I only use them now. Even fleeces etc don’t do the whole slip back to expose the boobs trick ?
