Rugs - weights & temp

I'm extremely glad I have a cob who is in work but unclipped so is naked predominantly!
I remember when I was a kid the rugging situation was it was either on or off none of these crazy which weight rug problems! Lol simpler times

It's been really warm here in London. My welsh d X tb has a chaser clip and tonight he's in a 150g stable rug and has been in a 100g turnout with neck. He lives in an indoor barn at night which is quite warm, and it was 12 degrees in the day.

Today was the first time in 12 months I've thrown a rug on the woolly mammoth. 200g as I hadn't realised his rain sheet needed repairing.

It was just so, so wet. I need to ride him tomorrow and his thick coat just doesn't dry out when he's been properly soaked.

He seemed pretty happy to be rugged & it came back without being torn to shreds which made me happy.

Always a bonus! Horrid weather out there just now - high winds with horizontal sleet such a lovely combo!

We have had torrential rain, frosts, you name it and my hunter clipped sec D is living out on my top hill field in a 100g! He had a 200g on for about a day but he was too warm in it, though appropriate rug weight does depend on the horse but it makes me cringe when people are commenting saying their horses are "toasty" and "snug" - that is not healthy, horses are good at regulating their temperature given they have adequate forage and movement but they can't cool themselves down when "cold" owners stick 5000 rugs on them.

^^ yep. If i stick my hand inside a rug and feel a 'toasty' horse then I know I've overdone it. The cob gets crotchety and itchy when she feels 'toasty' to the touch.
Mine feel warm in their armpits but not really elsewhere.

Fully clipped IDx is in a 200g with a Snuggy Hood (for cleanliness rather than warmth)
Unclipped (at the moment) TBxWelshxShire is in a 50g. He's just started work again after a lameness issue which we hope is treated and sorted so we're giving it a few weeks to be sure before clipping him.
Blanket clipped pony is in a 100g.

All three are plenty warm enough. The IDx will be in the 200g most of the winter and will only go up to 300g if it gets very cold for a prolonged time. Once clipped, the TBx will start off in a 200g, go up to 300g if it gets a bit colder and a 400g if it gets very cold for a prolonged time. It's the pony's first winter with us so we'll have to see how he goes but I don't see him needing more than 200g.

You should all be reported!!!

How could you turn your horses OUTSIDE in the rain and wind in -7 (!!!) without at least three duvets and a hw wug, ear warmers and heated boots.

Horses evolved in hot countries so they shouldn't be allowed to get wet or even a little bit cold.

OUTSIDE?! What kind of weirdo puts their horses OUTSIDE?! :D :D

Indeed.

*whispers* my two beasts who supposedly live out 24/7 may just possibly have indicated that they wished for a room with a door and a nice thick bed last night (the weather here being diabolical at the time).

These 'hardy' neds snuggled up in their Back on Track rugs eating astonishingly large amounts of ad lib hay, looking very smug as they did so.

Mine are in, unclipped and naked. Others in yard are in, clipped and wearing a 350g full neck with stable rug underneath, I have no idea what they are gonna do when it's proper cold. Comments keep being made to me regarding how cold it is lol

Someone on our yard, who kept their horses in yesterday due to the rain, called the rest of us cruel for turning out in the rain (rugged suitably, I must add, and fields have plenty of natural shelter).

I personally felt it more cruel to not even get theirs out the stable that day for so much as a walk, but we are all different I suppose.

30 years of horses, mine have always gone out in rain and have certainly come to no harm. People are strange.

Well I'm not surprised. You have no idea about toasting horses. How do you expect to get a crispy coating with just bare skin???!!!

Silly me!! I was so close to crisping them up tonight as it's meant to be -7 and I'm crisping myself up lol but I remained hard hearted and tough skinned (like they will be, ha ha)

My ISH is in a 100g turnout and I added the neck when the rains came ... and boy have they come! He is out 24/7 and was toasty warm when I checked him this morning. He has plenty of grass left.

Still the same, highs of 8 degrees apparently today although feels considerably colder due to wind but its dry so the neck came off again today. Still loads of grass, not feeding hay and after he walked away from his token feed last night because 'his mate was out of sight!!!' I've decided not to feed him any hard feed either yet because clearly he couldnt have been that hungry, lol!

If my no fill brand new, but brought last year, rain sheet had been waterproof he would still be in that to be honest but it damn well wasnt!!!!

Am going to change bills rug from 100 to 200g this weekend I think, unless it starts warming up more during the day. He's out 24/7 but yesterday's temp was about 3*C during day and it was starting to freeze at 5pm when I was bringing in the other horses/feeding. I had to break the ice on his water barrel!!
It was -5 this morning at 7am :(

I bet you found yourself an underdone horse this morning didn't you? Don't say I never tell you anything.

hahaha, what should I do if I toast my horse for too long and the inside turns to gloop?

Then, my dear, you don't have a horse, you have camembert. Pop in a clove of garlic and get some crusty bread for dipping.

6 degrees today and the blanket clipped ISH is out in a medium thanks to the wind (no shelter), when she comes in tonight it'll only be a lightweight and blanket. Think we're getting the best of it in cambs this week as im taking rugs off rather than piling them on - supposedly up to 11 on saturday. Sunbathing weekend anybody? No doubt i'll be stuck at work.

Wind at the yard was freezing this morning. Checked all three and they were plenty warm enough even though I had an extra 2 layers on!

My boy just got clipped yesterday, a sort of trace clip type clip so his back and rump and legs and half his face still have hair. It's about 6 degrees at the moment but a cold wind, I have put him in a medium weight with a detachable neck- I don't know if I have it right. I had planned to ride a lot more than I have, so I am feeling guilty and wondering why I bothered having the poor fella clipped at all :(

You ought to be ashamed! How could you!! The only thing to do now is go buy one of those £300 Wugs... that is the only thing that will stop your horse from freezing.

Have I got it wrong that clipping allows you to develop a rug fetish? LOL

Inch thick ice on the water troughs - horses still very happy in their 50 g turnouts despite freezing all day and once again -7 territory.

I am more concerned about getting them to drink enough in this cold snap

Alas, i truly do know the shame. To make up for it I bought 3 Wugs and put them all on at the same time- my horse can't actually fit through his stable door anymore, but he is warm :D

'atagirl! Just widen the frame. Proper horsemanship that, why should they be made to walk through such narrow walkways anyway? :)
