Rule of thumb converting size of full girth to dressage girth?

Hi all,

So after four or five months of treeless saddle research on the tinternet, I am on the verge of ordering my Trekker saddle. Super excited!

My little mare, is slightly more rotund now since she hasn't been ridden in a while. She has a full girth on the treed saddle that no longer fits. I have two full girths, 140cm and 150cm. She is in between the two sizes, So 145cm or 57 inches.

I understand the Trekker saddles will need a dressage girth. So is there a rule of thumb for converting from full girth to dressage? I am also going to get one of those curved, or moon shaped girths, will that make a difference?

I asked the very same question a couple of weeks ago. The answer I got, which proved very accurate was to take 20" off. You need to make sure it's long enough so the buckles aren't interfering with her elbows though. As my long girth was on holes 2 on both sides I chose a slightly longer short girth to make sure so went 18" shorter and it's perfect.

I read on the net somewhere about 20" and somewhere else about 26"... That's quite a difference, so that's why I posted. Confused! Lol

20" less would be 37"
26" less would be 31"

The place I am ordering from is offering 24" or 28"!

it's not an exact science because it depends a bit on the shape of your saddle flaps mine wore a 54" long girth and now has a 28" short girth. is there someone that could lend you a girth of roughly the right size to get started with when your new saddle arrives, and then you could measure to get the perfect one?

42/44 long

24/26 short, which tends to go to the bottom of my dr. saddle flaps but means that it doesn't catch his elbows

so I would say the 20" is not far off.

Yeah, you are right miliepops.. I think it does depends on the saddle. The lovely lady from the place where I am purchasing the kit, has advised that the largest one she sold was 32 on an Irish draft. She normally measures by half the full size plus 2. That would make mine 25.5". So going to go with 28" I think unless anybody else has any more thoughts?

My little mare is only 15.2, albeit with a bit of a tummy now.

Mine is a 17hh TBxWelshxShire weighing 700kg and with a bit of a belly. Despite this his girths aren't that long. He has a 50" long girth and 32" short. My other 16.3 IDx who actually looks a lot slimmer has a 54" long girth.

I think the 28" sounds about right.

so exciting about the Trekker, Shadow is 15hh with a bit of a belly and i use a 22 with mine but i could use a 24, your girl is 15.2 so as you say 26 is probably the correct size, 24 will be too small so go with the 28 if that's all Louise? has and if you get a problem i have a new size 26 shaped waffle Thorowgood here which i can post to you. let me know how you get on . xxxxx

She said 24 or 28 inch. So we will go with 28. Going to get it ordered today or tomorrow and then hopefully should be here soon... Depending on the efficiency of Spanish postal services! Definitely think the Trekker is the best one for us. *clasps hands with excitment*
