How far have you run with your dog? I'm training for a marathon, its a trail race so nearly all training off road. At the moment, longest runs are about 6 miles once or twice a week but obviously this is increasing week by week.

How far can I expect my 18 month old, long legged parsons jack russell to come with me, she's coping fine at the moment but don't want to do her any harm.

Also any tips to help her - I check pads after every run, she has oily fish twice a week for joints and I massage her regularly. Anything else I could be doing?

Any help appreciated

I currently run 10 miles twice a week with my dogs. (at the most)
They also get an hour run with my husband in the mornings (but not my running days)

Make sure they are on a great quality food.

Try and get her to a swimming pool once a week so she can do some low impact exercise as well.

Mine wear boots on long runs.

Thanks Katielou, I was thinking 10 miles would probably be the most I could do with her. There's a hydrotherapy pool at a local kennels so will look into that too!

At that size, you could consider a dog backpack (for you, not her!) which I imagine would build your strength levels as well as allowing her to come on longer runs with you, run for as long as you want then cadge a lift the rest of the way.:)

As she is small, she is the perfect age to start, she will tell you how far is too far, start off slowly and build her up, of course depending on what exercise she gets now will depend on how far your first run together can be.

Use boots on rough ground to prevent injury

My JRT (9yrs), comes out on hacks with the horse and probably does 7-8miles, but has to run a bit faster as we have a few canters (he lets me know when he needs to rest/slow down a bit as he runs in front of my horse and barks at her). :)
