Rode Blue last night and each time i went in to canter he got faster and faster and faster!

I could stop him but he was quite strong too.

I was trying to practice my dressage test and fast canter is NOT required! Sensible steady canter however IS!

Why might he be doing this?

He has got the hang of cantering 'round' and in a contact now (he was cantering like this last night but just a bit fast!) and we've just cracked staying round and in a contact in the trot/canter transitions...

It was a little chilly last night like zero when i was riding but wouldn't have thought that would cause it particularly? He's had no more days off than he would usually.... do you think he's maybe just getting stronger or something??

Possibvly he is getting fitter.

Sussex will charge around the school at home but when you take him out to a show he seems to understand that he is not supposed to canter at 150mph and slows down and really sits on his bum.

With him i think its because he is too comfortable in the school at home and doesnt see it as a place to work properly whereas when he is out he knows that he is there to do a job

Sorry if that doesnt make much sense

If he has only just learnt to canter in a contact, he is probably still a little unbalanced, thus ends up going on his forehand and getting faster. Try doing loads of transitions to get him sitting more on his hocks, also don't canter for too long (so he doesn't get chance to get unbalanced) i.e. do half a circle then back to trot. Walk/Canter transitions can also help gives you more chance to get (and keep) him round.

Well its not that new a thing for him to canter in a contact, he's been cantering like it for a few months now...

Its the trot/canter transitions staying round that we've just got the hang of literally at the weekend!

Hope he doesn't do it at our first dressage test lol!

My mare used to do that and this is what my instructor advised me to do and it sorted her canter in one lesson Walk on a circle and do a turn on the forehand and then walk on after a few strides ask for canter from walk and if they speed up bring them back into walk and do another turn on the forehand and continue.
