My youngster has a rather snotty nose. I've looked it up on the internet, but am confused by the different things I've read.

Some people think that if it's clear, the horse is all right and just has a cold..my girl's snot isn't clear but (I know it sounds daft) I can't see her being really ill, as she's still fine and happy in herself. She doesn't look tired or run down and she's still a handful when she wants to be.

However, the snot is a funny colour..and it congeals round her nostrils. She coughs every now and then too (I assume this is attempting to get the same kind of fluid off her lungs, could be wrong). When she's coughed, there is snot on the floor outside her stable.

She has been a lot less snotty the past couple of days, so I don't know whether it would be a waste of time getting the vet out, or if I'm missing something

I don't think she has strangles. I asked advice from someone on my yard, who said the mucus would be streaming from her nose and she would have swellings if it was strangles. She doesn't have swellings and there isn't that much snot, and no other horses on the yard are ill.

I don't think she's very ill, but I don't want to do the wrong thing. Can anyone shed any light on this please? Is it just a cold?

Has she got a temperature?

Also, does she get dry hay? The horse that is stabled next to mine coughs up yellow snot when he gets dry hay.

Dont want to panic you but we had a couple of horses with strangles on yard a few years ago. Some of them who swapped positive had very little symptoms other than appearing a bit under the weather. Might be worth isolating horse and getting swabs done as a precaution. Chances are its just a cold but having survived a strangles outbreak on a big yard I would rather be safe than sorry.

No she doesn't seem to have a temperature..She's always warm, but that's just the normal thing under her rug..I've not found her sweaty, either.

She gets haylage..It is dry but I don't think it's as bad as hay.
Umm..I'm not sure if it's that cos she's been in overnight for a few months, eating the same haylage and it's only just started.

I guess if she has a cold, any dust won't be making it any better..?

Yeah, I know what you mean Molly. Although, she's been turned out with my other mare, who has no symptoms whatsoever.

I am seriously considering getting the vet out, though, as she's confusing me a little. I'm guessing they'll want to test for strangles as a precaution..

Do you have a thermometer though? I can't tell if my horse has a slight temperature by just feeling by hand - it would be best if you can take it properly

It would be worth getting one for the future anyway - should really be in your basic first aid kit. You can get them from most tack shops/bigger feed merchants etc - some are easier to use than others but if you get a proper horse one it should come with some instructions and info about what is a 'normal' temp for a horse.

When you get one, practice taking the temperature every so often so you get an idea of what is normal for your mare - there is a normal range, but some horses can be at the higher or lower end of that (my mare's temperature is always at the high end of the healthy range). Then, if you suspect something is not quite right with her, you can just pop it in and compare her temp against her 'normal' temp. HTH.

hello,no need to panic but my horse had a very snotty nose this time two years ago.it was yellow and smelly! the vet said it was a tooth root infection however after sedation and copious amouts of x rays it was discoverd to be sinasitus!! this cleared up with 15 days of eqitrim sachets and a bloody good gallop to shake it all free!! its disgusting but if your hose has a temperature and the mucus smells call the vet immediatly! hope this helps

What bedding is she on as dust can give them a snotty nose but many horses have it this time of year. If it's just the odd lot don't worry but if it starts getting worse get vet out and they will give some antibiotics
