In this weeks H&H, Ruth edge appears in both the Eventing and Dressage section for winning something........is this the same woman? They look very similar
I'm not meaning to put anyone down here, but surely someone competing at BE at the highest level should be competitive in the 'other' disciplines of BD and BSJA to the level at which they compete BE
Advanced BE is 1.20m to 1.30m SJ'ing i believe and so i would 'expect' to see eventers BSJA'ing to that level, and likewise the BD equivilent
ETS: As another example, you often see PF competing at a decent level of BSJA. She's not bad at dressage either from what i understand
Wow i thought it was the same person but then i thought how would she have enough time to compete all these horses, all over the country in different disiplines!

She's also successful at BSJA as well!

She was 2nd in the Foxhunter class at Rowallan the other week and 3rd in the 1.25m Open.

Okay, so that actually backs up my point...She's BSJA'ing to the level that she would SJ in a BE event. As i said before, i'm definitely not putting the BE'ers down...they are some of the hardest to beat in BSJA in our area...i just find it a little odd that people don't expect them to be doing well in other disciplines. After all the eventing season is only about 4 or 5 months long....what are they gonna do for the rest of the year if they don't BD and BSJA

We spend the rest of the year saving up to pay for our entry fees and diesel costs............
Im not shocked that she is competiting in differents disiplines BE BSJA BD just that she can still beat the pure dressage people and pure showjumpers at such a high level whilst still doin BE and being at top form in that on many different horses.
She wouldnt BE at the level all the time though - she probably competes babies in PN/Novice etc more often then the do 4*events.
And just because we have to do dressage/SJing and XC doesnt mean we are good enough in every phase to get placed in it - everyone had a strong point when eventing - mine is dressage and XC but im not a great SJer - therefor just cos I BE and have to SJ doesnt mean I have to be good at it and will get placed BSJA.
And the BE season is March-October - 7months.
But yes you are right we do SJ and BD through the other months. But dont solidly BSJA or BD as much as people who just do that do. If you get me!
Often it is the same horses which event and dressage(and SJ) Her horse Two Thyme is amazing at dressage but he has another name as someone already had is BE name.

Okay, i guess it's possibly a perception thing, but Foxhunter/1.20m is Novice level in pure SJ'ing terms. Often as not a steady double clear will place you
I don't know what she won dressage wise to provoke this post but it could be the same principle
I dont understand that - isnt British Novice Novice level like BE Intro?
And it is so good that she is placed at all these different disciplines not just that she is doing them - because of course she should be doing them like all us eventers do throughout the winter and some of the season - but doesnt mean we get placed!! The fact that she can win BD at a high level BSJA at a high level and be placed at somewhere like Badminton means she is a very talented rider! All on a variety of different horses!!! I do believe IMHO that eventing is one of the hardest sports as you have to "try" and be good at everything!! All 3 disciplines

Well, yes, it is, but in 'real' eventing terms isn't 'Novice' what would have originally been classified as the entry point of eventing, as was Foxhunter for SJ'ing
My view of BN and Disco (and i fully expect to be shot down for expressing it !) is that they are nothing much more than 'training' classes for getting horses used to the ring. Any horse, and i do mean any horse, should be capable of jumping a BN and most a Disco
We could have the 'dumbing down' debate all over again here if we like
Well, winning 4 regional championships on extremely good scores is probably something noone else has done this year, so a pretty big achievement. Ruth did the small tour dressage with her ex-eventer Shining Pupil (evented as 'Big Thyme') last year, and has won at PSG in BD - so competing at dressage at an unusually high level for an eventer. She also spent 2 week training in Holland in dressage in January. But I don't think many eventers showjump a lot bigger than they have to for eventing - other than the odd amazing person like Mark Todd who managed to compete - was it at the Olympics? - in both SJ and eventing.
I used to compete up to 1.30m/1.40m level....but as you (i suspect!) now know, i am on the verge of getting back into Foxhunter (1.20m/1.30m) classes after an 18yr break
I freely admit that i 'use' the new lower levels to jump BSJA....but i stick by my claim that the 90cm and 1m classes are more for the riders than the horses. Horses don't really tend to start jumping until about 1.10m/1.20m imo.

Anyways gone off subject a bit! so I will finish off with Ruth Edge is an extremely talented rider

And i have been agreeing with that statement all along.....although it has started to feel like an argument rather than a discussion at the end
[/ QUOTE ]
Im not arguing! Just came across like you was putting her sucess's down - like she "should" be doing that and doing well anyway - which she shouldnt its because she is talented
