After some poor performance issues in canter, my 6yo was recently diagnosed with a sacroiliac joint problem following a bone scan and has has steroid injections into the joint and I'm now doing 6-8 weeks of exercise on the lunge/ pessoa to build up the muscles to hopefully support the joint long term. He is out 24/7 now, with some additional hay as the grass still needs to push through a bit more, and has just a token jesture of hard feed - hifi and small amount of conditioning nuts - he's a pretty good doer.
I don't know yet what the long term prognosis will be, only time will tell, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice about how they have dealt with this problem. Any dos/ don'ts. ie Don't ever jump? Any supplements? I was considering giving him devils claw as I have heard that it can help certain horses? But I'm not sure if it can be given long term to a young horse? Anything else I could look into? Acupuncture?
Obviously anything I do will be done in consultation with my vet, but I'm just looking into all avenues to gather as much information as I can so that I give my neddy the best possible chance of recovery. Having never dealt with this problem before I don't want to accidently do something which could affect his recovery, just due to my lack of knowledge. I'm pretty patient so taking things slow really isn't an issue if that's what I need to do!
Thanks!
