Each to their own totally but once I'd made the decision I just wanted it done. I had to wait a week for assorted reasons and that was a week too long for me.
I have held three of my previous horses when they were pts. One was via injection, two by captive bolt. I prefer the latter, as it is immediate and the person that does this in our area is calm, kind and efficient.
The one pts by injection (done by an extremely experienced and kind equine vet, who knew the horse well) fought the medication and it was, for me, heartbreaking.
My current old horse is, to date, continuing to be the resident idiot of his herd, flying around, shrieking and fly bucking. Just because he can. I will discuss his final plan with YO, as she or her staff may need to supervise it if I'm unable to get there. My equine veterinary hospital and my YO already have my signed statement authorising the YO to call them to pts if my horse has a catastrophic field injury, develops colic or is down and unable to get up.
