Very sadly, despite all our best efforts we had to put Anja to sleep this afternoon...we are just devastated!

This morning Anja seemed back to her normal self, but at 2pm after checking on her just 10 mins beforehand, she was down again, sweating and shaking very badly. We knew there was no going back. The vet was called and came out quickly and I knew by the way she looked at me that there was only one answer.

I just cannot believe it. This mare has had 19 years of no vet visits, and we never ever thought her life would end like this. She was carrying a foal by the KWPN showjumping stallion, Hemmingway, and we were all very excited about it, because if it was a filly she was going to be gifted to my mum...but it just was not meant to be.

I was with her right through to the very end, and talked to her the whole time, hoping that she knew we had tried our best......

The whole event went very peacefully with her best friend of the last 9 years watching on.

It is just very sad looking at her empty pen, that she has occupied for a very long time.

Rest in Peace Anja.........you will always have a special part of our hearts, and we hope that Sharon looks after you over the Rainbow bridge. We are sure that Geneve will be especially glad to see you, as you were his favourite mare of all times...

You were a fabulous breeding mare, and always gave us 1st Premium foals.

Love you so much....xxxx....will miss you a lot..

I'm so so sorry for you, how tragic, and what a wonderful mummy she was to have taken on a surrogate foal. My thoughts are with you and i feel so sorry for you having had a really shite few weeks, i hope 2009 brings better luck for you. RIP Anja, you sounded a legend in your own lifetime.

I'm so so so sorry for you. It is always so hard to lose a loved one but at least you can rest assured that you did the best thing possible by her and gave her a wonderful life. xx

oh i am so sorry to hear this, it sounds like you were both very lucky to have had each other for what sounds like a wonderful 19 years

RIP girlie, may you run free with your friends x

As above, 2008 has had bad karma, I hope 2009 is much better for all

Hx

Thank you everyone for your kind words, they mean such alot during an awful two days.

Tonight both me and my hubby are feeling very very raw, not to mention tearful....

I am now completely paranoid about having the rest of the mares teeth done, as that is booked for two weeks time. My vet told me that I am only caring for the welfare of the horses but I cannot help thinking that having her teeth done yesterday contributed to all this....I just dont know.......

I have had to return and post my deepest sympathies to you. I could not post when I first read your thread as it had me in tears, my mare is also 19 and the thought of losing her is too hard to bear. I sincerely hope 2009 is a better year for you.

RIP Anja

I was just sitting here thinking of my old boy (in my sig) and this has just finished me off. I am so sorry for you, words are never enough, but this is tragic. Lots of love for you and your family.
