Very sadly, despite all our best efforts we had to put Anja to sleep this afternoon...we are just devastated!
This morning Anja seemed back to her normal self, but at 2pm after checking on her just 10 mins beforehand, she was down again, sweating and shaking very badly. We knew there was no going back. The vet was called and came out quickly and I knew by the way she looked at me that there was only one answer.
I just cannot believe it. This mare has had 19 years of no vet visits, and we never ever thought her life would end like this. She was carrying a foal by the KWPN showjumping stallion, Hemmingway, and we were all very excited about it, because if it was a filly she was going to be gifted to my mum...but it just was not meant to be.
I was with her right through to the very end, and talked to her the whole time, hoping that she knew we had tried our best......
The whole event went very peacefully with her best friend of the last 9 years watching on.
It is just very sad looking at her empty pen, that she has occupied for a very long time.
Rest in Peace Anja.........you will always have a special part of our hearts, and we hope that Sharon looks after you over the Rainbow bridge. We are sure that Geneve will be especially glad to see you, as you were his favourite mare of all times...
You were a fabulous breeding mare, and always gave us 1st Premium foals.
Love you so much....xxxx....will miss you a lot..
