Hi.. I'm new here, might as well start of with asking for a bit of advice!

I lurk around this forum alot and have to say if there ever I time I need any help on anything I come here first before anywhere else because usually whatever I need to get advice on someone had experienced it here at some point! However struggling with my current issue so thought I'd better join and ask away.

I have 4 horses (only two ridden as ones a 20yr old shetland and one broodmare due to foal any day), my latest being a just turned 7 year old Registered Connemara mare. Have to say I've owned various breeds over the years but this is my first connie and the one I need advice on.

Basically having issues with saddles. I have an 17.5" med Albion K2 jump for my big lad, which I absolutely love but I tried it on her and it seems to be a bit small width wise, too narrow as it perched on top of her with a bit of a wobble side to side yet drowned her in every other way. I did try it and had a sit on see how she went it it but soon as I tried canter it slipped up her neck causing her to buck all round the school.. obviously not at all her fault so off I got.

I've tried a friends saddle today, just trying to get an idea of what kind of width she needs and it was a wide, fit her much better over the wither but I still felt a bit perched on top with nothing in front of me and still wobbled a bit side to side regardless of girth being tight.

She has a bit of an odd shape. She has barely any wither and a fairly flat back yet is so narrow on her shoulders it's like there's nothing there.

Can anyone recommend a good saddle to fit her relatively odd shape. Once I've found one that fits reasonable well I will get my saddle fitter out. He doesn't carry second hand saddle only adjusts the one you have. I don't know of any saddle fitters local to me that stock reasonably priced saddles. I don't want to spend a fortune just yet as she is going to fill out alot more.. I hope she is anyway.. She seems to have the body of a Connie and the shoulders of a young TB lol. I'd ideally like something with some knee roll as I do like to jump but can bit a bit wimpy and like the security of the knee rolls!

Anyway if you made it through all that then thankyou for reading and any advice much appreciated! :-)

Hello,
I just saw your post. I have a Cliff Barnsby saddle here which was fitted by Hilary Vernon to my 5 yr old Connie who sadly had to be put down. Depending on where you are, I'd be happy to bring it over for you to try.

That's not an unusual shape for a Connie, I fit a lot of them and most aren't super wide, they need a very flat tree from front to back but need a pommel, twist and seat that isn't too wide, or it will swamp them. You also need short points as they are a native and long points cause all sorts of issues including perching, Albion has long points, the K2 is slightly shorter I believe, but still not properly short. Not many trees out there fit the bill so search carefully, please feel free to pm for more info.

Thanks sbloom. Unfortunately after me having a few concerns over the last few days over the possibility of her being in foal a scan has confirmed it this morning. So she is being returned to the yard I bought her. I'm gutted as shes a lovely little mare but I've got one due to foal any day now and just don't have the facilities to cater for another one. Not to mention I bought her as my 2nd ridden horse. So bit upset today, dealers wouldn't agree to give me my money back so I have to settle for a swap for a replacement horse to the same value. Not the news I wanted today :-(

Oh what a shame. Is it not a legal obligation for a dealer to take a horse back when it's not "as described" (ie a horse suitable for riding and not pregnant!)?

Yes it is a legal requirement. The horse is not as described. Was the horse vetted at purchase.

Reading again I guess it's all about a refund versus another horse. I would possibly consult CAB/Trading Standards, I'm not sure how this "exchange not refund" thing works with horse dealers as I don't think it applies to general retailers.

Bad luck JRP!

Sorry to hijack your post but I would be interested in your recommendations, Sbloom, for the makes of saddle that might suit an awkward young Connie.

Sorry I hadn't seen the replies here. I didn't end up sending her back to dealer my friend bought her off me so she's in a lovely home now and I still get to see her baby when it arrives :-)
