Many girths have elastic attached which has much too much give in it. It must be strong, and yes, it may go a hole higher than a non-elascticate girth, how it feels when you slip your hand under is it what matters. I hate the weak elastic that most companies use. And horses for courses, I can't think of a horse I've used one of our girths on that hated it - there are Atherstones and Atherstones.
