I also use a leather headcollar to a normal leadrope tied to thinned twine. I leave the leadrope tied in the box all the time and lead in with a different one.

I am considering trailer ties with a quick release clip but wouldn't want elastic ones due to the recoil when they release being potentially dangerous.

I use Idolos everywhere. Depending on the horse/situation I will either ...

a) clip onto to weakened twine (but not too weak!) and put knot in the end of the leadrope so they can pull the rope through a little bit if they are spooked etc but when it reaches the end where the knot is they would have to give it enough of a pull to break the twine- i often do this when tied to the outside of box so there is less risk of losing them when out and about
or
b) clip directly onto ringpull but not have a knot at the bottom of leadrope - this is what i mostly do for travelling

I think they are great and I have them at home in stables/ at tie ups and in horsebox ready with the leadrope attached so i just lead the horse up and clip on the leadrope that is already set up. Saves fiddling around with looping the rope through the idolo

I haven't tried it but have heard of using a cable tie on the headcollar where you clip the leadrope. Just clip onto the cable tie instead of the ring and cable tie will break if needs be. You could then just use ropes ready tied in the truck to just clip on.

I'm weird... I found that my horse travelled better if I didn't tie him up & broke less things. I don't like the bungee things having seen them break too often on other people's lorries & when I did tie up I'll admit I just used a bit of bailing twine & a normal leadrope (I guess if your tie rings are in a stupid place then maybe leave one tied on there that you just need to unclip?)

Have ordered leather headcollars.

Am debating the actual tie.

I need to be able to lead 'the horse' in and clip up quickly and safely once in. The nature of the side loader means the horse still has an escape route should s/he be so inclined, unless there's someone to bring the partition round, though I'll often travel one horse without the partition right against the far wall so the horse has the full width.

I don't want a horse to panic and if it does I want it to calm quickly, so I completely get the idolo idea (and will get one of those anyway as think will be useful on the yard whilst Titch is learning to be less twonkish), but am concerned that pulling back when inside the lorry will result in one or two loose horses. Not ideal. However, I do need quick release by human hand should the need arise. I'm also concerned about a horse pulling back and taking the tie ring / wall with him, having seen a friend's horse when tied up outside deciding he wanted a particular piece of grass - the lorry's wall was bowing out. Not a good few minutes.

So, and sorry, I'm thinking through my fingers here, feel free to ignore - need secure tie, release should the horse get into major panic and start thrashing, and the ability to release by hand in an emergency.

Think my fingers need to sleep on it :eek:

I've got equi-ties in the horsebox and a quick release trailer tie attached to it. When I load just clip it to the (leather for travelling) halter and take the leadrope off. Means if anything happens I don't have to worry about untying the horse and just unclip and unload.

For tying up in the stable I've got Equiping rings. Everything is taught pressure and release and everything stands tied up in and out of the box but better safe than sorry so they have every safety measure that I can think of.

I use a bungee with a safety release clip in the lorry, would never use a normal lead rope again after previous pony went over the breast bar in my old trailer & got stuck, I couldn’t untie her & if the extremely brave groom at the yard where I was having my lesson hadn’t climbed in & helped, the outcome wouldn’t have been good. Never tie up to the outside of the lorry & don’t understand why people do.
