When I bought my horse a year ago the vet notes he had a few small sarcoids I went into panic mode and nearly didnt buy him because of some of the horror stories I had heard.

One was like a small spot high up inside his hind leg and there was a small flat hairless area on the opposite leg showing signs of 'crusting' her word not mine.

Well I monitored them and fed him Echinacea for the first few months. I lost the second one completely some time ago and now I thought bum I havent checked the other for quite a while , you have to get up close and personal and use his sheath as a headrest to see it, and it is nowhere to be seen.

Some sarcoids will drop off by themselves, other lumps may not have been sarcoids but something that was going to disappear all by itself anyway.

Either way, good news!

The chances are they wren't sarcoids as there are many conditions that look similar & a definitive diagnosis can only be made by biopsy. However, there are a few horses where sarcoids do just disappear of their own accord & the good news is that these horses are unlikely to get anymore for the rest of their lives. Glad it has worked out well for you.

Don't forget there are no rules with sarcoids appearing and also none on them disappearing spontaneously with no treatment at all! We had one 4 yo develop a couple and they went by themselves. I think reduced immunity has a lot to do with their progress. I would wager that a horse who gets rid of them* by themselves has developed whatever immunity prevents them occurring in the first place. I'd also be fairly confident they wouldn't re-appear.

*Unless of course these 'sarcoids' were never sarcoids at all...

My girl had loads of sarcoids inside a hind leg when she came to me (on loan!). Vet suggested Liverpool Blood Root Cream, then only on test rather than widely available, and the biggest one went away. A couple of weeks later, the rest, bar one, vanished.

The remaining one stayed for 4 more years, but has recently, well, gone! Strange things ...

I don't remember your post when you bought him but the trouble is that if they look like sarcoids you have to assume they are sarcoids & act/decide accordingly until proved otherwise.

It would have been nice if I hadnt worried quite so much over it. I am always going to monitor the areas but I could have done without the nervous breakdown at leasst I have a horse that doesnt mind me messing with his nether regions.
