I had to say goodbye to my horse of a lifetime just before Christmas and tomorrow it is the turn of his stable mate. It never gets any easier but they both had good retirements.
So sorry. No it doesn't but try and take comfort from the fact that you have given them a very good life and a good death. Its all any of us can hope for really.

He went with a mouthful of carrots could not hear his buddy calling for him. The call was made last night he was gone at 09.30 so no time to arrange for a companion. Have had his buddy fretting which has made it so much harder thankfully he has now settled and has next door's ponies on the other side of the fence so not totally alone. We had owned him for 15 years and he was a gentle ex-racer.
The one I lost just before Christmas I bought as an unhandled just gelded 3 year old out of a field who had very smart breeding. I backed him myself trained him myself and we had a lot of fun together and I owned him for 25 years.
At the moment I just cannot stop crying as I miss them so so much.

I've been thinking of you off and on through the day. Sounds like he got the best possible end, happily eating carrots, and then it was over.
It is us left behind that suffer, and struggle.

Nice to hear that his buddy have settled, at least for the moment, hope it continues that way. Wow, what an experience you had with the horse you lost before Christmas, bought as an unhandled 3 year old, backed yourself, and then got 25 years together. The memories you must have with him.

But to only around 6 months later also have to say goodbye to a horse you've had for 15 years, that's hard.
