Today was so scary, took Beauty for a walk on the fields near the farm like I do on a daily basis. She got down to roll, something does often and just stopped. I asked her to get up, she didn't and just lay flat out. I tried to lift her head up but it was too heavy, she wasn't responding to voice or touch, Just to reflex things (eyelashes, whiskers) I managed to get hold of YM who ran to the fields. In the 10 mins it took her to get there B has stopped responding, her pulse was faint and her breathing was shallow, her gums had also paled.

When YM got there, she managed to get her up with a lot of pulling, me getting her front legs out and some very kind dog walkers helping with her back legs. When we got back to the stables she was back to normal, pulling for grass , eating/drinking normally. Her back left leg is stiff so I have put a dose of no-bute in her feed.

My friends horse used to do that and he had a conditiont where they just randomly fall asleep for no apparant reason, I cannot for the life of me remeber what it is called though, hope she is ok though.

sounds circulatory to me heart etc. I take it she wasnt paddling or stiff... wld hae to wonder about a seizure then. Echo what others say.. must have vet exam asap if not alreday done so. Good luck

Yeah, We are really lucky on my yard as one of the other liverys is also an equine vet who checked her over. She said she was ok, just to give her no-bute and contact my own vet in the morning to see about bloods. She is 44

I did consider staying over at the stables as there is a 'guest stable' with camp bed and kettle, but I am doing exams this week so I wasn't allowed to stay over. I know that she will be checked on at about 12 when the owner locks up and I will see her about 5

She is 44

Count each day as a blessing. Awful as this may sound, if there was to be a next time, I'd be tempted to sit quietly with her and if she slips away, be hugely grateful that she made the move.

How lucky you have this grand old lady. I'd have given my eye teeth for another 16 years with my girlie.

yes i totally agree. i would give anything for another 32 years with my treasure, actually just 1 day - just to cuddle, kiss and feel his soft velvety nose, to hear him call again, it breaks my heart i will never hear him again. xxxxxxxxx

After I had phoned YM I did consider that these could be my last few moments with her, The girl I was with went to meet YM and the dog walkers who were stating with me had backed off. I just sat with her head on my knee, stroking her and telling her I loved her

I have to say, my old pony did this once. She would never usually let you anywhere near her when she was lying down. On this particular occasion, she just rolled flat on her side and let me stroke her and cry all over her face (I thought she was slipping away) and her breathing altered too. I called my friend over and they went to get my kids out to say goodbye. It was awful, yet very peaceful and I was convinced she was going to her forever sleep. Until she suddenly sat up and looked a bit surprised to see us all there. Two ticks later and she was back on her feet as though nothing had happened. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or carry on crying (with happiness, this time). She left us about 14 months later, so by no means the end. She was a mere 28.

44 that is an amazing age, i bet that did give you a real fright.
I hope she's ok but ditto the others treasure all the time you have with her :)
She must be a fine old lady hope she is ok :)
