Following on from Irish Cobs' post below, what is the scariest thing you have met out hacking?

For me, hands down, it was a peacock! Riding round a country lane where we go all the time. As we rounded the corner, a peacock appeared from the field on the left. Walked out into the road in front of us, turned to face my horse, and fanned out its tail feather!

I swear I could feel my horse saying WTF???!!!

It was actually more funny than anything else as it was such an unusual thing to encounter.

So how about you?

a falabella pony and an air ambulance helicopter - think my girl was more scared of the little pony though than she was of the helicopter even though it landed not far from us at all, she walked past it with a bit of snortin and puffing - as for the little pony there was no way she was going past that and when it went to walk towards her she ran backwards as fast as she could ! :-))

Shetland Ponies. My boy goes past anything, first time I drove him on the busier road a tractor went past which some iron rollers on the back rolling on the tarmac he looked at it but didnt do anything about it. But shetland ponies are just soooooooooo scary.

A guy in full camouflage gear holding a gun, tucked into the sides of the woods, just standing there. Bodey saw him well before I did, I didn’t see him until the last second. Scared the crap out of me anyway, especially as I was on my own. He didn’t say a word as I rode past, just looked at me.

Another for shetland ponies.
All of mine hate them and the have all stopped if passing one.
Prince who is the most bombproof hack wouldn't go near the field with them in. I had to get off and lead him past on the other side of the road with him snorting like a dragon!

a swan!! lol!
we were hacking down a large stream & it came at us to attack. We had ridden down the stream plenty of times before & it had never been there. Both horses spun round & shot back up the stream! We came out the other end soaked, but at least it was a hot summers day!

SHEEP!! HORSE EATING SHEEP!! and an adult male swan protecting its mate and babies! they are massive upclose! prince said hell no!!

A VERY low flying jet. We were going full pelt gallop and the next thing he's stopped dead and shaking. The poor thing was so scared. He's not really a 'spooky' horse, but this was scary, very low and very fast.

Apart from that, I think it was probably a small painted blue stone that we go past everyday

The collection of fridge freezers did it for ginger cob, he has a heart attack everytime he goes past them!! Oh and the geese that are in the field next to the fridge freezers
grin.gif
Not forgetting the fully decorated tinsel and all Christmas tree that was up the lane from the geese and fridge freezers!!

These are all good ones! My horse doesn't mind shetlands - though he does find them to be curiously small!

I think he would brick it at most of the other ones - particularly the combine harvester & 2 tractors, camouflage man, drunken bird man, attacking swans, low flying jet, and the small blue stone.......

I think you can always tell when they are genuinely petrified as I can feel his heart beating though the saddle - bless!

A drunk sat up a tree who thought he was a bird!

Brilliant!!!!!

Mine doesn't usually bat an eye lid at most things - except one drain we sometimes pass (yes, only this particular one!). Although suddenly, at the age of 17 and despite keeping her on a farm/groundworks site, is absolutely terrified of tractors passing her on the road!

For me it had to be when I lived in Australia. While hacking out on a quiet track on a ex racehorse I met a huge kangeroo! I just froze, so did my trusty horse. I was sat there trying to remember what I should do and after a few seconds it just bounced away! Its not some thing Ire ever forget.....

Many moons ago, when I lived 'doon sooth' a cheiftan tank going full pelt (on Salibury plain).

More recently, an air rescue helicopter coming from a gully below me (what is that big green fly????), horse eating sheep and cows, and the most horrific of them all..............purple flowers!!!!

Years ago my friend and I were riding along a single track lane and met a lady pushing a pram - how scary was that! The horses just would not go past and were backing up the lane and spinning etc - we had to get off and lead them - the lady was not amused - I expect she might have thought the horses were going to knock her pram over.

Oh and there's a rabbit hole at the end of the drive which they walk past almost every day - but it's still scary!

When i first started hacking out my 4 year old it was a boat that he can see his reflection in when he gets close to it; it is kept in a drive on the way to the off road hacking!

Lamas (or Alpacas - I can't tell the difference

). The horses found them VERY scary, I just about managed to take this picture before Charlie turned and hightailed it in the opposite direction

I have also met a family of Peahens, peacocks and little Peababies

Again Charlie found them terrifying so I had to get off and lead him past them

The latest thing I have seen where some White Ostriches (which I didn't even know existed
shocked.gif
), luckily Charlie didn't see them as we would have been in the next county before I could count to 10

All these can be found within 1 1/2 miles of the yard Charlie is on (all in different directions though!).

Donkeys! Meg can't understand them and will literally crouch down when we have to pass by their field if they are by their fence. I swear I can feel Megs heart racing.
Gyspy Horse PULLING its caravan... just don't go there!! Did you not know it was designed to gobble you up whole??

A car crash with the unconscious driver heading straight for us!!! My ex racer so so not bothered I had to kick like hell to get him out the blinkin way!!

Same horse encountered a tarpaulin coming off a trailer and landing on his head. Just shook his head. I truly believe he was as bomproof as they come!

Good gracious 3beasties! Does charlie live in a zoo?!

All very scary. Although some of your replies are encouraging me to make another post about the most innocent things your horses are scared of - such as purple flowers & a blue painted stone!

Mine is scared of one particularly gnarly looking tree on a hack we go on all the time. He also hates fishermen (hiding on the river banks with their light sabers......sorry fishing rods).

He also hates classic cars (Morris Minors, old MG sports cars etc.). Modern cars are fine - but not cabriolets....

Yea, a peacock running down the road in front of us dragging its tale was very scarey.

My friend was out riding when a van drove towards her with a stuffed elephant's head on top, with the trunk drapped down over the windcreen. The pony didn't take any notice!

oh yeah Llamas. I remember once mid hack in very quiet field I stopped for a mid hack wee was holding on to horse while having pee, llama pocked head over the hedge row(didnt even know it was there) well what can I say, a)glad I was alone in the field b)glad i had been lazy and wearing trackies which I could pull up straight away hahahaha

Lol, you'd think so wouldn't you! No Zoo's though, there just seems to be a lot of small holding around with weird and wonderful animals living there!

I think they must compete against each other to see who can get the most exotic animal

As for Innocent things he's scared off, that would be grass!! Yep, just plain Normal Green grass on the side of the road
