Well not my gate, but a friend of a friend who's a dairy farmer went out for the day one day last week. Upon his return, he thought he had a LOT more than the 40 odd cows in one of his fields. A closer look revealed 12 black & white Gypsy cobs amongst his cattle. He also noticed there was a note on the gate which said "If anything happens to these horses, the same will happen to your cattle".

He's contacted the Police, the NFU legal helpline and a solicitor and no one can come up with a solution.

Has anyone experienced anything similar and how was it sorted out?

If he could, I'd move the cattle.....leave the horses and stick a notice on the gate saying 'this horses seem to have been abandoned, please remove them by the end of the month...'..or something.

A friend got into a dead-lock with travellers, did a similar thing, the travellers lost.

:D

There is an article in last weeks H and H about a firm which specialises in legally lifting these horses, get in touch with them and get the horses removed. Once moved, dump a load of manure to prevent unobserved access to the field
Ask police to give you a crime number, they are not always keen to get involved as they are often told to act softly softly, the notice should be bagged as evidence.
Move the cows to a field where they can be observed. Find out where travellers are in your area.
Remove all gates from the field and anything else which can be stolen from any unobserved areas.
Get a surveilance camera and record any movements. Buy some geese to act as watch dogs around the farm yard.
Always carry mobile with a camera and photo [with date and time] anything suspicious.
Take a photo of each and every one of the horses, both sides and face.

A classic start to all urban myths. Its never someone known to the story teller, but always a friend of a friend ! Sorry no offence directed at you, but this just sounds like a tall tale to me.

It's my neighbours friend then. They were discussing it on the phone when I was there, it didn't sound like a tall tale to me!

Yes - absolutely this - if farmers do not start to take action then these scum will carry on breaking the law!

Take the cows out and put the bull in...ideally a friesian bull! That usually solves the problem fairly quickly. Also attach an electric fence current to the gate but make it difficult to be seen...then hide & watch while the gits get a whopper shock!! fun fun

Travellers are very vulnerable, they just get in with the intimidation first.

I'm having to re-consider this sentence, is it an oxymoron?

Greek ὀξύμωρον, "sharp dull") is a figure of speech that combines contradictory terms. Oxymorons appear in a variety of contexts, including inadvertent errors such as ground pilot and literary oxymorons crafted to reveal a paradox.

Put a message on the gate saying that a slaughter lorry is coming to collect cows on 30/06/2011 if your horses are not removed then they will be joining the cows on the lorry as i do not have time to try and seperate them.

They do that round here, the farmers have their cows on the river bank (they have permission so all above board) but then the traveller just stick there horses in with them, farmer complained and guess what, his cows were let out on to the mane road until he agreed to share the grazing.

Notes are no good, half of them can't read.

Is feel vulnerable if you cannot or won't go to the Police when things happen, and all my family and possessions are don the side of the road,

That makes no sense to me at all....
And as for the note....well some bu**er wrote it in the first place so I think i'm safe in assuming the responsible party CAN read!

I like this!!

section a small area of field off and herd the ponies in to it.......then on the note saying cattle going to market etc......attach an envelope with an invoice for grazing and also say that if not moved within a certain time that the RSPCA are coming to take them or say that for each week they are on the land you are claiming one pony as rent........mention that cctv is in full operation and police have been notified and are doing regular drive by's keeping an eye out.

I cant believe this- exactly the same happened to the farmer we rented fields from last year- only his cattle were off to slaughter- so he left a note back saying- thats Ok- mine are due for slaugher. If your horses are not removed within 21 days so will your horses.

The farmer was not a pushover - fiery man (even scared me and he was our neighbour)

the horses were removed about a week later. Could you try something like that- or too risky if not for slaughter?

ETA- having now backread- most of you would have gone for this idea anyway!

Oh, that makes this kind of threatening behaviour 'okay' then!?
