Scary note on gate :(

I think they mean to treat like with like. So to get rid of the travellers give them a taste of their own medicine. Dump his slurry all over their pitches and trash their flimsy caravans.

Rough em up, treat em bad and send em on their way ? Bullying and intimidation is the only language they know so give it straight back to them ??

I think this is whats meant.

Oh now I see, I took the whole thing out of context all along.

Apologies Pale Rider. Now I get it! (maybe)

These threads are always so sad. Yes, some Travellers behave very badly, but not all do. I met quite a few in the course of an old job, and some of the them were really nice people, in just the same way that some people that live in houses are nice people and others are not. I remember one young lad in particular, a bright, articulate, polite young lad who anyone would be proud to be associated with, who had been beaten up for being a Traveller so badly he was left with a fractured skull. If this happened to someone's son on here, there would be outrage, but as it is I suspect some people on here will think that actually, because this lad is a Traveller, what happened to him is no bad thing. Which makes me sad.

The fact that bad things happen to Travellers does not justify bad behaviour from them, but at the same time the fact that some Travellers do bad things does not justify violence against all Travellers either. Judge people by their actions, not by the labels that are put on them.

I know some lovely travellers, in the sense that they are lovely to us and know where we live and what is out of bounds.

I also know some right dirty buggers, and there is complete truth in fighting fire with fire. They dont respond to ''chatting'' and ''reasoning''. You tell them to rack off and if they dont then accidents start to happen. Then they beggar off and try it on some other beggar.

Or even better, pit them up against a strong woman, scares the hell outta them! ''what, this woman isnt doing what i told her to? ahhhh run away'

they value their ponies quite a bit so go out with permenant hair dye & dye them why be piebald when they could be rainbow ponies :) they shifted the sexy cob stallion off our grazing sharpish once he turned from a bay skewbald to a bay & bright barbie pink & bright electric blue skewbald.

PMSL! You DIDN'T!!!!!!!!!! Love it:D

People's views on others in the main depends on their experiences with them and not many people seem to have had good experiences.

I am reading Eva Petulengro's story the girl in the painted caravan and her story about real life traditional romany's is lovely. It does seem that the romanticized view of the real romany's has been diluted over the years by the really rough lot over from Ireland and these are the real problem ones.

When you have finished that try "Gypsy Boy" by Mikey Walsh.

Now to be fair where are these poor misunderstood travellers meant to graze their potentially olympic winning steeds??!!:D:D
The police are about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe, the only way to beat the travellers is to fight fire with fire!!
Mains electric fencing, Get nice friendly cow to chew a few horses tails off, oh and the friendly bull always does the trick!
And hide a crow banger in the hedge really scares them!!!!

Yup, we did. think ive even got pics somewhere still. made the buggers shift off pretty sharpish though.

they even had the nerve to rake up our hay & feed to said horse & as their beasts were on our land the farmer wouldnt bale the hay due to risk of teathered horses getting loose in panic. having 9 acres of hay go to waste cos of them tipped me too far & having seen them sniggering at my sec A blue/white scewbald tit (he rolled in the blackberry brambles) it gave me the idea.

will try & find the pics & scan them into pc to post.

Sorry that made me laugh, handbrake on a canoe LOL.

If you did wire them to the mains though and one of them got hurt could you be liable ? Does David Cams new right to protect your home come under this category or is ' home' only for indoors residential space?

Do agree with doing all we can personally though as the authorities are useless and these people just stick two fingers up.

Persephone - thanks for the recommendation.

Put a message on the gate saying that a slaughter lorry is coming to collect cows on 30/06/2011 if your horses are not removed then they will be joining the cows on the lorry as i do not have time to try and seperate them.

better still move the cows to safety then leave the note saying the cows have GONE to abattoir and if you dont remove the horses they will join them that way they cant do anything to harm the cows in the mean time

The only about putting a bull in there is whether they decide to kill it for steaks!!!!

I like the idea of digging a big trench say 4ft by 10 ft deep then cover it with ferns etc as they try they drop to bottom then put more ferns over it and so on then when they all in there fill it in human grave hehehehehe:D

Spudlet, i agree with you that violence is not justified. i don't like the way this thread is going. Threatening to send the horses to market, dying them pink, barricading the fields, these are all acceptable but talking about beating the travellers up and attacking their homes is not really on.

Farmer up our road found 10 coloured horses in his field of sheep with a paddlock on it. it had a note saying " do not enter, please phone 00000( mobile no) if access needed".
Farmer got a solicitor on to it pronto and served them with an order. Horses soon went.

The little lad that got his head kicked in by a group of bigger lads was not trying to do anyone. He was trying to walk home from school.

Which is completely and utterly wrong, as is the idea of trashing caravans etc. Partly because its wrong anyway, and partly because unless people behave better than the people they are attacking, then what right do they have to criticise their behaviour, other than 'he did it first'

The problem is that for many communities living in close proximity to travellers, there is (from my experience) a massive amount of criminality and anti social behaviour, Because of the transient nature of the occupants and closed society and intermarriage with lots of people called the same name and unregistered businesses etc, much of that criminality and anti social behaviour goes unpunished whereas it would be very quickly dealt with if it came from settled people, and the settled community are left dumped with the problem but are unable to get anyone to address the issue as they are all too frightened either of the travellers themselves (who lets be frank pride themselves on sorting out issues with their fists) or of being labelled as racist.

Personally I had absolutely no issue with some of the travellers at our local site, the peaceful, law abiding ones. But they dont rule the sites, the biggest baddest family does, and that influence permeates the site, not helped by the kids being removed from school at 11.

Generally people resort to launguage such as that on some of these posts when they feel that they are given no other redress for something that is manifestly unfair ie seeing a group feeling they are able to flout the law and are in effect untouchable. Unless that is addressed, it is probably unrealistic (tho it would be nice) to expect those views to change.

In other words, until I find anyone who live within half a mile of a site and DONT find that they are plaugued by fly tipping, abuse and criminality, it is not reasonable to expect people to welcome travellers. And to change this reality means travellers themselves addressing some of these issues from within the community.

They have had years to address the issues in their society, and done nothing but take advantage.

No quarter I'm afraid, they have proved themselves to want to take advantage of the settled ordinary folk, and are a threat to people pets and property. They should be moved on with as much force as is necessary every time they stop.

This completely. What annoys me the most is the Police's action (or distinct lack of!) towards their behaviour, they may well be an ethnic minority but they should still obey the same laws that the rest of us do. If I did some of the things they do I would be in jail, but because they play the minority card they get away with it.

Is it that or are the police just scared (I would be)? maybe it's both!

PHRx

Well the site near us was small and official council 'run' one and even if reporting a crime with eye witnesses , the police wouldnt enter the site without both armed backup and helicopter cover.

I draw my own conclusions....

Interestingly when complaining to the RSPCA about the horse cruelty going on there (the sort of cruelty that involved serious injury/death for the horse not minor stuff), the RSPCA also decided not to come out and investigate, but sent us a batch of horse welfare leaflets and asked us to distribute them to the occupants of the site....:-)

We had a little coloured colt left in one of our fields a couple of months ago. We rang the animal welfare department of the council who sent us some signs saying if this pony wasn't collected within 14 days we would retain ownership of the pony. Nobody came but we did see a white tranny van stopping at the gateway - we later found out the driver was the owner and was checking the pony, he totally ignored the notices. So we brought the pony up to the farm and 'hid' pony in the old fold yard. The white tranny van could be seen running around the area obviously looking for pony. He eventually rocked up in the farmyard asking where his pony was. Because the 14 days had lapsed the council had sent a letter saying that we could legally retain ownership of the pony (which was a good job because we had given the pony away to a girl who likes that type of horse. Anyway we showed him the letter and said we'd had it shot.

Just before Appleby we had another 5 chucked into a hayfield we rent, I knew the travellers who they belonged to (and they aren't your reputable type of traveller) so I went and told them to shift them otherwise I'd get them shot as well luckily the bloke who owned the other one was related to the lot who owned these ponies and he must have said that we meant it and they were gone within a couple of days. They were probably going to shift them anyway but it doesn' hurt to have a reputation that you aren't prepared to take any crap.

Hog the horses and clip the legs out etc. Their horses are nothing without all their long manes and feathers ;)

I had one climb over my gate and walk on my yard bold as brass! when I asked him what he wanted he said mind your own biz so I told him he had ten seconds to get the feck off my yard. I picked up my large mallett and started walking towards his car outside, opened the gate and managed to hit his car with it twice before he came running out. Got called a few names and said he would be back, ha.
Ten minutes later another car pulled up and asked me what I thought I was doing? Told the man (turned out to be the top gypsy) that no-one should be coming on to my yard and if they did I'd chop their legs off with my machette as I looked at him I relised how short he was so said' I see someone has already had a swipe at you' he started laughing and said he'd never come across a women like me and that as long as he was around there would be no trouble and there wasn't.

Moral of my story is make it known you wont be taken the pi$$ out of. ;)

To be fair they have set themselves up for it by trespassing then threatening a farmers livestock if he tries to remove them from HIS property. I'm sure there are some nice travellers, but i'm yet to meet one and i'm going on my personal experiences (many of them un-fortunately) vile people, hope this is resolved soon and no harm comes to any helpless animal.

Fantastic story, made me laugh, but seriously you were lucky with who you were dealing with, you stood up to them in their own language and won, but a different set of travellers on a different day may have seen a different outcome...... why do you think the police and welfare organisations have to tread carefully, at some locations the police will not allow anyone other than police onto a site, officers have been shot at and threatened on numerous occassions. I'm not saying it's right, but human life has to come first..... To most of the travellers it's all a game of cat and mouse, but some are very dangerous.

I would be wary of retribution if personally taking them on (however, let any one of them touch a HAIR on any of mine ) but I have no idea why the Army can't be brought in with a couple of tanks and maybe a helicopter loaded with an offensive substance. They can hardly go ransacking the local army barracks. Then the police could be saved face and I think the spikes would be pushed into line.
