While out hacking alone on Sunday with the horse loan I had a nasty reminder about the dangers and risks of horse riding. He spooked (which is out of character) and bolted across a crop field, he slipped and both of us hit the deck and slid on our sides. He is 18hh so a long way down for both of us. We are both ok, no broken bones, just cuts and bruises and very shaken. He has been checked by the vet and is only mildly lame (due to some small cuts on his off-fore), and has some cuts and scrapes on his side. I have the almost exact matching cuts and some very sore ribs. I was knocked unconcious for a short time and when I came round I was unsure where I was for a while but realised he had waited with me. I called a friend and people were with us within minutes as we were very close to our yard.
I always tell someone where I am intending on going, ALWAYS wear a hat, but stupidly on this occasion did not have my body protector on. It was in fields that I normally ride round and he is usually 'trustworthy' and 'safe'. But on this occasion he was literally running scared.
Basically my point is sometimes we have a harsh reminder we are not invincible, and there is no such thing as a bombproof horse. We are very lucky to have the privilege of riding these wonderful creatures but they do have a mind of their own!! I will continue to enjoy my wonderful boy, but will definately think twice before I go out on my own.
