While out hacking alone on Sunday with the horse loan I had a nasty reminder about the dangers and risks of horse riding. He spooked (which is out of character) and bolted across a crop field, he slipped and both of us hit the deck and slid on our sides. He is 18hh so a long way down for both of us. We are both ok, no broken bones, just cuts and bruises and very shaken. He has been checked by the vet and is only mildly lame (due to some small cuts on his off-fore), and has some cuts and scrapes on his side. I have the almost exact matching cuts and some very sore ribs. I was knocked unconcious for a short time and when I came round I was unsure where I was for a while but realised he had waited with me. I called a friend and people were with us within minutes as we were very close to our yard.

I always tell someone where I am intending on going, ALWAYS wear a hat, but stupidly on this occasion did not have my body protector on. It was in fields that I normally ride round and he is usually 'trustworthy' and 'safe'. But on this occasion he was literally running scared.

Basically my point is sometimes we have a harsh reminder we are not invincible, and there is no such thing as a bombproof horse. We are very lucky to have the privilege of riding these wonderful creatures but they do have a mind of their own!! I will continue to enjoy my wonderful boy, but will definately think twice before I go out on my own.

Glad you are both nearly ok, I rarely ride alone and rarely see traffic, people etc, but still have everyone hi vised up, just in case.
Funny moment last week, did a fun ride, horse had his leg wraps on his brilliant white legs,, five minutes into the muddy woods you couldn't tell he had wraps on, never mind what colour his legs were, but a good day was had

Thanks for your messages :)
I dont know what he spooked at as I can't remember much about it. Possibly something rustling in a hedge etc. He tends to have the odd small spook in open fields but has never dont that with me before. He is very well at the moment so maybe is just feeling a bit full of himself.
He seems much better and his cuts are healing nicely(as are mine!). He has been going on the walker first and last thing to make sure he doesnt get stiff after being in his stable at night.
I am still very sore so will just take things slowly and assume he is as sore as me before I jump back in the saddle!
I dont think my confidence has been affected too much but I will only find out once I'm back on. As I said before he is a very big boy so its a long way down!

Thanks again :)

Also can anyone advise me, I am now in need of a new hat!! I was thinking a champion, but has anyone got any suggestions, I dont want to declare bankruptsy but am happy to pay a decent amount if it is for my safety.
