The RSPCA always try and pass on their work to everyone else and do nothing themselves IME!
 
That's just one of the worse things I have ever seen .
Makes you ashamed to be human .
RIP little one and I hope mum gets sold to someone nice .
Good question why the RSPCA don't step in when I was involved with welfare they had a big presence there .
I don't think I could bear to be there .
 
I too think that things would be better if these 'fairs' did not exist, but do you really think they will just go away?
there will be uproar about 'rights' and 'tradition' and large proportions do support these communities, part of the reason they will get support is because if it does not happen in the current locations it WILL happen somewhere else-it wont just go away. So banning these events will cause massive conflict between the law, the minorities involved and those that support them and will only move the problem whilst the minorities gain support from the average member of society (if there is such a thing).
 
I don't think the fair is the issue , they are just doing after in public want is done for the rest of the year in private with a bit of swimming throw in.
 
the pic of the mare and foal in harness is apparently two years old so I am not sure if stories of the foals death are correct

Also someone has posted online to say the two horses are not actually related as they know the person driving the 'mare' and that person has nothing to do with the foal

Someone on Facebook posted 'I wouldn't be surprised if the adult horse was the foal's mother' and posts that followed later in the day suddenly had the two as mare and foal where previously that connection hadn't been made

Just goes to show how someone can light the blue touch paper on facebook and the stories start
 
I've seen pictures that my friend took this year of a very poor trotter yearling in harness on the flash :(
 
Across the road from where I keep my horses is a gypsy camp (I am not sure of the correct term). It is a long-standing hold and they keep a number of horses there which they race up and down the road every day (the road is a very busy, major A road dual carriageway). The horses are skin and bone, you can see every rib and their spine protruding from beneath their skin. When being raced they look terrified (heads in the air, eyes boggling and sweat everywhere). The boys and men on the carts find this hilarious. They have nearly caused a number of accidents due to racing two-a-breast along the road, and over taking one another when there is traffic about.

They recently dumped a dead horse in the woods belonging to the farm where I keep my horses. An elderly lady, whilst walking her dog, found it. The farmer had to pay someone to come and remove it from his land. They regularly poach on the farmland and have both attacked the farmer physically when he asked them to leave (on more than one occasion) and have stolen two dogs from a neighbours farm to use for hunting. The farmer of the other farm actually found them on his land, hunting with his dogs and when he went to take them back was assaulted so badly he ended up in hospital.

No charges have ever been bought against them for two reasons, as I understand, 1. Those within the community give one another alibi's and 2, the police are too afraid of the gypsy community to get involved.

I find it sickening on so many levels.
 
poor horses, ethnic minority of the Mobil kind again. Don't care about life only what they can get out of the animals.

I could not spend the money given to the RSPCA for the animals by an old lady in her will on a new carpet and new car
I could not be rude to a person queuing up to adopt and tell them to go away and come back with Hubby
I could not say to a person phoning "is the animal being cruelly treated" "Oh it's injury from RTA sorry I cannot help"
I could not leave a poor ill black mare to suffer after a member of the public brought it to my attention at Southall Market and leave her there 1 hr + while I stood around and chatted before walking over to see the horse in question.
I can't stand around and let animals suffer- so I guess I fail!!!!!

This is sadly true. I've been there when friends have been told by the Police not to pursue gypsies who they had seen stealing their things. One friend caught them stealing, followed them in their car straight into the local camp and was told by the Police that we don't pursue them. Another friend had their trailer stolen, it was seen at the camp yet the Police didn't even come out to the crime scene, just told her to claim on her insurance.
I saw some gypsy horses being chased around in a cart in the town centre in Stafford recently and it was horrid. They were skin and bone, clearly terrified. The driver thought it was hilarious, he was on the wrong side of the road most of the time and I was amazed he didn't cause an accident.
 
it pees me off big time. Years ago a friend had two labradors stolen-they were seen up at the camp by us (I'd driven her up there) and the police did not want to know. In another instance, I was nearly run down by a drunk driver (I was driving) from the travellers camp when I stayed down on the south coast-police did not want to know.

When I last saw Gypsy Wedding, they had one family standing by a array of cages all containing dubbed game cocks (dubbing is illegal in the UK as of course is cock fighting-it means cutting off their combs so the rival cock can't grab hold of it).

If any Western European country treated their daughters the way the travellers do here we'd be up in arms about it as well-oversexualising them, underschooling them and marrying them off as teenagers, its archaic.
 
Dubbing isn't illegal but you do have to do it before the chicks are a certain number of days old

There is a chap near me that has had his farm equipment stolen steadily over a number of years and cannot get police backing despite being able to see his machinery in the nearby camp. He has now sold his house and is building a cabin on the land itself so he has a fighting chance of keeping his possessions safe
 
I have spoken to someone who witnessed the accident, it was a head on collision between 2 horses being 'flashed' down the lane. One died pretty much instantly (one of it's back legs almost severed) the other one was pts at the scene.

I do know quite a few people who used to go to Appleby regularly who no longer go because of things like this. Years ago it used to be a good fair and an opportunity to see the old bowtop wagons and horses turned out immaculately.

Nowadays it seems to be full of the wrong sorts who don't give a stuff about anything but themselves. They are total scum.

Couldn't agree more.

Appleby and all of these fairs should be banned these people should not be allowed horses, dogs, ferrets, birds or any other sort of animal as they have no respect for life. End of. Stuff tradition - that doesn't make cruelty acceptable.

and today, local to me, a stolen lurcher found at the local camp-a JRT pup still missing. These dogs were stolen from an excellent boarding kennels and the patrol dogs beaten so they could break in.
 
I wouldn't believe everything you read on facebook / daily mail. They choose the worst photos as clickbait, and half of it isn't even grammatically correct, never mind true!

By way of balance: I once gave an old gipsy man of my acquaintance a ride up to Stowe. For him it was an opportunity (aged 80+ and 2 years before he died) to meet old friends and family - for the old travelling families this is the main purpose of these fairs, to stay in touch. He was welcomed like royalty. I knew this man and his family for 20 years. He lived in a vardo at the side of a lane, with his horse on a tether against the hedge. I'm sure some would worry that the horse was not stabled etc, but I can tell you that horse was tended to with love and attention, and lived to nearly 30 in good health.

The man/gypsy type you are describing is a whole world away from the modern travellers and these old types are VERY rare, there really is no comparison between them and a shame as the modern travellers are so bad. We are surrounded by permanent camps here as well as the types that descend upon you ,park on the local common or fields with their new 4x4's and caravans, wreck those with rubbish, race quad bikes around, light fires, burn out cars,fly tipping and stealing from local stables and HONEST people, ALL of which I have witnessed.
I had a run in with one who drove too close to my van and smashed my door mirror off, nearly ended in a fight.
I went to the police, described the incident and gave them the reg number, without a bat of his eye the policeman told me straight away without pausing he knew who it was and where they live and that he had no insurance, no licence and no tax on his vehicle. The policeman also told me, he won't go after him so claim on your insurance or go to the MIB, he said don't file a complaint as I would probably get a brick through my window.
When a serving police office tells you that is it no wonder people hate travellers?

What a lovely picture you describe with your rose coloured glasses. You have clearly never set foot on Fair hill during Gypsey week, and I think the press choose the best photos. Do you really think they are all like the old gentleman you have mentioned?

Witnessing a three year old smoking with his 5 yo brother once there (still clutching their blankets) I can believe this.

There are good and bad in all walks of life, and I may have rose tinted glasses (I drive carriages, so routinely have dealings with gipsys, and have found them honest in their dealings, as it happens), but if you think they're 'all scum', you've clearly been watching the young loudmouth types from afar, rather than actually having contact with a cross section of the community.

You're being racist. Your statement is like condemning every Englishman by what you see after the pubs kick out in Magaluf.
