My young mare isn't very good with the farrier. She's not afraid or nasty but will just walk through you/the farrier. We found out that an old owner used to rope her front feet and tie them up to stop her walking away (and would leave her like that for quite long periods of time) and we think she doesn't like the restriction of having her feet held up. Two farrier visits ago she cut the farriers arm quite badly so for safety reasons I had the vet out to sedate her last time. The vet gave her minimal sedation, just enough to relax her and she was brilliant! I'm unable to coordinate vet and farrier this time so farrier has agreed to try her using some oral sedation.

What would people suggest I use, Sedalin or Domosedan? I have never used either before.....is one more 'user friendly' than the other?

Any experience of either would be appreciated.

Have used Sedalin and found it helpful, believe Domosedan is much more sedating though. A vet offered it to me to give to a pony who needed transport and kicked hell out of the trailer, but the owners uplifted her so we never tried it. I would think though your vet is the best person to advise you? I had a horse which was really dangerous to shoe and we used IV sedation, then Sedalin, then nothing-though hard work beforehand helps-maybe not for your youngster though. Good luck.

Have a look at zylkene, is natural and worked wonders on my boy to travel him Calmly.works in same way as a baby having a milk feed. No sedative effect, just nice and chilled. No need to see vet as can buy without presvription. Good luck.

Domosedan is basically the same stuff they give as IV sedation, but you put it under the tongue and it's absorbed through the mucous membrane.
Not 100% sure what's in Sedalin just know that it didn't work for my old horse. If it works for yours it's cheaper than Domosedan, so I would be inclined to try it, especially if the horse isn't desperate for shoes - if it doesn't do the trick I guess you could abandon proceedings and try again another day with different sedation?
