selling a horse to someone over the phone

I think the reason why people are so aghast by the idea of buying/selling over the phone is because it is not the way we suppose it should be done..but I feel if the OP asks the right questions and gets the right answers and on a plus point buyer has been honest and unfront I'd say go for it..its a sale..and no matter how hard we would like to vet potential new owners, circumstances do change and horses are sold no matter how many times sellers are told about *the home for life*

Good luck in whatever you decide x

thanks dude...sorry i didn't get back to you before, has all been rather hectic today  i think i am coming round to the idea TBH... have spoken to her again about plans for the horse and its sounding more like there is a genuine client...what i like is that she has been honest from the start... i wonder how many people on here have sold horses to what they thought were legitimate buyers, offering a 'home for life' and then finding out the horse has been sold on...at least this way i would know that there might be a possibility of him moving on... argh, anyway, will sleep on it tonight and see if they ring back tomorrow, if not have a few possibles who have also rung up...so...watch this space! :)

She isnt based in Billingshurst with a view to moving the horse to North Devon? I have someone who phoned about my mare with a view to purchasing her for a client. If it is, let me know - I wll forward some 'articles' that may make you think twice! If not, great and good luck :-)

I bought ours over the phone, he was a 6 and a half hour drive away and I was heavily pregnant so didn't want to make the trip.

I spoke at length to his owners on the phone, who seemed honest and genuine, had him vetted and the first time I actually saw him in the flesh was when he stepped off the transporters lorry!

It all worked out well for us (see my ex-racers first outdoor show post) I would have been gutted to miss out on him as he wasn't going to wait a week for me to have the baby! We love him to bits and he has a home for life with us.

I have bought and sold horses over the phone :)

Fact is once you sell a horse you have no idea what is going to happen. One horse I sold to a dealer's daughter, deffo not selling on, home for life blah blah, ended up being sold on within a week at a VAST profit (£5500!). One I bought that I really thought I would be keeping long term just wasn't right for me and was sold - there are no guarantees in life sadly.

Latest update in the scenario of this is i have decided not to sell at all...my head tells me to sell- the lady seemed nice and i believe her story. However, it is this ‘once you sell you can’t guarantee their future’ business which i think has been really bothering me. Have sold horses before and not been this worried so i know its not me being soft...so have decided to look for a permanent loan home for him instead- so i get to keep an eye on him and hopefully have him back in his retirement (by which point i’ll have won the lottery anyway!) haha
