So the time has come and Sophie will be moving on - she is a 7 year old chunky girl, we think her breeding is Dales x TB, has done RC showjumping, dressage and WH, also placed HT and is a great little hunter. Will jump a course comfortably at 2'9" to 3', individual jumps across country can do 3'6" out hunting. Good to clip, shoe, handle, travel - a safe horse for a novice, and will pick up and perform for a more experienced rider too.

The photos are a bit dire as my camera wasn't really behaving but hopefully you can tell me which you think are best of the selection below, and steer me towards a price

Depends how many pictures you can use, but I'd say the top 3 - my favourite is the second one though.

As for price, if you think 3ft is about her limit competition wise and shes just a nice allrounder then I think something in the region of £3000 is about right. If shes got potential to jump higher and affiliate BSJA or BE then you could probably get around £3500.

I have a foal due late next summer, and two other horses to ride so I really need to cut down a bit. She has been brought on from being a 5 year old that had done very little as a bit of a project and companion to my others when I had a small yard. Now we are on a livery yard with other horses I cannot justify keeping her (much as I would like to )

How big is she? I am going to disagree with everyone else LOL - I don't like the top 3 as she has her ears back in each one! I love the one of her out hunting as her expression is calm, alert and obviously happy. She looks like she would look after someone out hunting. I would get another one of her without tack on, one schooling/jumping and use the one of her hunting. Guessing she is around the 16hand mark, I would say £4500-5000

The 2nd picture is good, but is it a little out of focus? I second what others have said, a simple conformation pic would be good too....or perhaps a jumping one.

Price - Anything from £2500 - £4000 I'd think.

Clearly I'm in the minority, but I'm gobsmacked that people would pay over £3000 for a nice but fairly average allrounder, particularly coming into winter!

I was always told that, but I had great difficulty selling my mare who was a novice ride, and was well schooled and a showjumping schoolmistress to boot.

That's a shame Spiral.

I don't think any horses have been selling well over the last few years TBH. I know someone who has has a very nice broodmare up for sale for at least a year.

Yeah it was very difficult. On the recommendations of people on this forum I started her as 6k ono and in the end sold her for just under 4k - it took me about 5 months to sell her in the end, and she wasn't even a difficult or quirky horse! Funny because when I sold my first pony it only took a few weeks, and he sold from a local ad! Times have changed!

I think people would pay more than 3k for a nice sensible horse that they can do a bit of everything on. If she is a good hunter then thats a really good selling point.

I think advertise for 4.5k and take expect anything over 4k

I think the trouble is spiral people would rather spend £1200 on a 'bargain' from a dodgy dealer or a rescue case, then wonder why they have a messed up, lame meat horse. Those prepared to spend decent money on a nice horse are out there but seem to be vastly outnumbered by the others IMO

What height is she? Does she hack out alone and is she really safe in traffic? You say she has done SJ, dressage and WH - has she been placed in any of these? Is she usually clear SJ? What sort of scores does she get in dressage? All of these factors will affect the price.

She has done all these disciplines with a novice rider, she has been placed showjumping, does a nice dressage test (mid 60s) - she is simply a good allrounder, with the potential to do more with the right rider, or be a safe fun RC type horse for somebody less competitive
She is 15.1 and yes, really safe in traffic, alone or in company.

From what you have said, I would say about £4000 then. The advantages she has over Spiral's old horse is her age (7 is just out of the youngster range but not old enough to start depreciating rapidly), the fact that she has a current competition record and also she is not a chestnut mare! Much depends on whether you want to sell her quickly or hold out for the best price.

I must say though that I don't think any of the photos are particularly flattering - any chance you can get some better ones? The first and third don't show her whole body and are at an angle and the second one does make her look a bit strong. The hunting one is good in that she looks mellow and relaxed. If I was looking for a horse like that I would expect to see a jumping photo (preferably in a competition setting or at least jumping a filler or something similar) and a flatwork photo side on showing the whole horse.

The photos are usually the first thing people look at and they tend to make a snap judgement on that alone. It is worth begging or bribing someone with a decent digi camera to come along and take some really good pics of her in action. Were there any pro photographers at any of the competitions she has been to?

I'd definitely recommend that you take Weezy up on her kind offer - I think it will make a huge difference to how easily you can sell her. Having just done the pony seeking thing myself recently, I realise just how much you judge things on the photos! If photos are poor and the horse is local then people will chance going to have a look, but if horse is further away then people are sceptical about taking the risk. So if you get really good photos then you increase the number of people who will come to view, so increasing the chances of getting a sale and a good price.

I'd offer to come over myself but you are a bit far away from me!
