Selling and buying

I currently have a 15.2 grey TB who will shortly be 14. He's an ex-racer, closely related to Danzig, Mansingh and Petong. Ran around 20races but was not too good!! Anyway he's a great all rounder, Novice/Elementary dressage (will affiliate within the next few weeks) and is affiliated BSJA Newcomers with £200+ on him. No vices, sweet natured but grumpy in stable - pulls faces does not bite though.

In Summer I am planning on getting a young show jumper. Not too fussed, around 16.2, between 6 and 8. Ideally jumping Foxhunter but would love to do 1.25 and 1.30 tracks within a year of buying. Warmblood or TB preferably.

My plan is to sell my current horse with all his rugs and tack (his saddle was £1000 and mint condition but fitted to him as he has high withers, and all his rugs are top qaulity mark todd etc perfect condition, and he has about 10!)

I am aware that the new horse will cost a fair bit. Plan is to put £ from current horse towards horse no.2 and I am very lucky in that my dad will help me financially for the excess amount for horse no.2. I was expecting £8-10K for horse no.2 not including tack.

My question is, how much would I be looking to sell current horse for, to sell with or without tack (would I lose money selling with?) and how much I should expect to pay for the new horse.

It is a huge choice to make so any help or advice, positive or negative will really help me. You can see my current horse if you click the link (I hope?!) [image]http://www.bebo.com/PhotoAlbumBig.jsp?MemberId=1875698848&PhotoAlbumId=2129686154&PhotoId=4305719525[/image]

I have no idea if this helps but have seen it mentioned in a few other posts about selling/buying, and when it wasn't mentioned other people asked. He passed a 5* vet test before we got him (current horse)

Thanks!

I'm not very good with pricing up horses that have evented and at 14 you might have to drop a little...

As for the new one, i think you might need a little more money! I went to look at a 9yr old mare jumping Fox and 1.30's recently at a sjing dealers yard (prices were very competitive) and they were asking 12K for her with nothing.

All I can suggest is doing a search on various websites for similar type horses and seeing what they are going for. As to his tack and rugs, well, the prospective purchaser may or may not want them, and however nice they are, you need to work on the basis that if you end up having to sell them separately they will be worth about half what you paid for them.

And be prepared for selling him to be a totally depressing experience. I have just had the perfect child look at one of our ponies (after God knows how many numpties enquiring about him), they got on brilliantly, she jumped him at a show and he did his bit and came 7th in his first ever jumping class (and indoors) so the instructor came along for the 3rd viewing and she only had good things to say about him, then mother offered me £2.5k. You try finding a quality 14.2 south of Birmingham for under £3k - there ain't many about! (And what I get for him is the budget for the replacement pony)
Sorry about the rant!

I wish you lots of luck...

I don't think you need to be spending that sort of silly money at all! If you have it fair enough but you said you want to be competing at that level within the year so, if you have a good feel and eye for the horse you want and can see it has potential I think you can pick something up especially at this time of year for around the £5K mark (even probably cheaper). Just depends what work you want to put in I guess.

If your horse is good to do a bit of everything with and would be a good RC horse or for someone wanting confidence to jump at a higher level (ie schoolmaster type of jumper) then i think £3000 wouldn't be out often question. Obviosuly without seeing him is difficult to tell I have known recently (i insure horses) 2 15 yr old horses somone purchased for £5000 each basically just to hunt!

An average price I would say would be between £2000 and £4000 for that aged horse

If he has a few personality 'quirks' we shall call them, then maybe he's not going to be everyone's horse and you may need a more realistic price.

Hmm, is that of any help at all? Read it back and not convinced! ha ha

Thanks guys. Mixed opinions as I thought haha!!

For my current horse, I personally would not accept anything below £4.5-£5k for him. He's more competition horse than casual riding and that's the home I'd sell him too. I have compared him to other horses for sale, friends ones and back of H&H etc. and I couldn't find any Newcomers or Novice/Elementary horses for under 5k, regardless of age. He is 14, it's not old and he has another 4years at least competing at the level he is now.

As for new horse, I have also flicked through ads etc. and that's how I came up with roughly £8-10k as that seems reasnoble. I think it'd be very hard to find a young, fox+ horse for anything below £6k.
Fee_fee..I agree, a lot of my friends are in SJ (I am at hartpury) and they've dropped £60k for a 1.30 horse!! I'd like a Fox horse first, then hopefully go up the stages in later months/years. My local Sj dealer is Alan Spalding and his Fox horses usually go between £7 and £10k obviously depending on age, conformation and behaviour etc.

I am not planning on selling or buying until mid summer so I think I will have a lot of time to get a better idea. Maybe £5k is too much for my current one, I think I'd have to ask around a bit more although that's what I'd put him at

I am going to try and post pics in the picture gallery and will let you know if I am successful!

Well your grey is fab. I paid £8k for a 15 year old ex advanced event horse and he was worth every penny.

I dont think £5k is too much. He would be worth that to someone with less experience who wants to go out and have fun at riding club level or even more. I would certainly have no problems with that price

Think you may need more for your next one though, but it depends on where abouts in the country you are. In the south here they all seem very pricey.

Merlotmonster - thanks that has really made me feel a lot better, I thought for a second I was the only one who thought he was fab!!

Have to wait and see about the second one. I am in Aberdeen, Scotland but at Uni in Hartpury, Gloucester and I am willing to travel pretty much anywhere in the UK to see a horse if I am very interested. Considering I'd have to pay around £2k for decent new tack and rugs etc. it'd be £12k max. My mum and dad are the LEAST horsey people in the world and I think asking them to pay anymore than that for something they don't even like is not fair, even if they wanted to.

I'm pretty optimistic, I think there will be a decent horse which will crop up soon enough and be between £8k and £10k. A lot of my friends bought their eventing inter/adv for that and I have sj friends who spent that or less. So fingers crossed!
