Thank you all for your kind words. I am desperately sad and lost this morning but know I did the right thing. My little mare was amazing, so bold, brave and willing right up to the end. She had a huge dose of pain relief so we could get her to the field and she went with grass in her mouth and the sun on her back. The vet was only young but so compassionate and supportive and she shed a tear with me, as well as sitting in the field and chatting for half an hour after it was done. I couldn't have asked for more.
My little mare had the injection and went very peacefully and went down as if she was just having a lay down in the field.
For anyone worried about the injection it was very peaceful and calm. I had always wanted the bullet as felt it was better for such a big animal, however in an emergency whatever is available had to be accepted and I am glad in the end it was the injection.

She has been taken away and is being cremated so should hopefully have her back with me at the weekend, along with her last set of shoes which the crematorium are putting to one side for me.

My heart goes out to anyone that is going through difficult times with their horse but remember they have no foresight and my horses last memory was a happy one which I take comfort from. The mantra better a week to early than a day too late is so appropriate and I'd rather have said goodbye yesterday than drag it out trying for weeks only to lose her anyway. At least I know her pain was minimal and she is at peace running free with all the other much loved equine friends we have lost.I

Still thinking of you and the bleak situation you were presented with. It's a horrible disease, which many refer (terrifyingly) to as 'a touch of' laminitis but it's always a grave warning of something very much amiss. I know the loss is absolutely devastating but glad for you and her that the decision was not equally tormenting. Years and years of lockdown for them is no fun and the toll it takes on you is as bad. You did the absolute fairest and only thing you could and my heart goes out to you. Please have no regrets xx

ETA You posted just as I did. We echo one another's thoughts and I am glad you have been able to fully appreciate the whole picture. I hope you can smile soon and what a wonderful vet. They feel it too and that feeling of unity in situations such as you faced will be of great comfort - and to them also. God, I am in tears now!

I completely and 100% agree with you, and it sounds like you and the vet made a huge effort to give her the best send off possible, for which I admire you. RIP little mare

She will have known that you were doing everything for her and to go with someone you love at your side is the best it can be.

Please take care of yourself now - she would want that.
