Senior Joint Supplements

Hello folks, I am just a tad overwhelmed with Joint support. My boy (18) sadly had a fall in November that triggered an arthritis flare in his hocks. They were treated with steroids in January, but it seems to already be wearing off. The vet is involved and we are working on it. However, in the meantime and from now I ought to be giving him additional Joint support.

He is currently fed Saracen Shape-up, Mollichaff Dailyfibre both in very small amounts in the summer just for the supplement equicure boswelia.

I so far have a list of Joint supplements but wondered what everyone thought of the following:

-Naf Senior Superflex
-bettalife Joint support
-4cyte gel

I've heard amazing things about 4cyte. I have mine managed on 1 bute a day and I do a monthly cartrophen injection. He really needs another steroid but as his feet are sensitive I dont want to risk it (he seems to be doing a lot better more generally now that he's not on any molassed feed but I have to pay out of my own pocket for it. I am not a fan of Saracens feeds at all).
 
I tried 4cyte but didn’t notice anything to get excited about. But I know others have been happy with it. Currently have mine on Forage plus joint support which is similar cost to 4cyte. I’m happy enough with it. I’ve not found anything amazing tbh. Mine has 6 weekly physio and has had Tildren treatment from the vet. Vet suggested something for maintenance last time but didn’t help by saying what! Just the usual stuff and we’ll consider more medical treatment as and when.
Eta you have my sympathy with all this as I drove myself slightly mad with reviewing all my the different ones out there! Good luck!
 
I spent an awful lot of time reading up on joint supplements - so many of them don’t contain the amounts needed for an effect, especially of expensive stuff like chondroitin and hyaluronic acid.

The most comprehensive ones with decent amounts of active ingredients I’ve found are the Science Supplements ones - Flexability Plus and then the Pro one has extras like Boswellia and green lipped mussel in it. But they aren’t cheap.

I have to admit I feed about 8 different powders to get the recommended amounts very slightly cheaper than the Flexability, which is worth it to me as a skinflint, but won’t be for everyone!
 
I have used and had success with the science supplements flexibility pro. Vet commented on the difference. I can’t use it on current lad as it has a few too many added bits for flavour etc.

I do use it on my arthritic mini but it’s hard to tell if it helps as she tends to be better in winter and worse in summer which should be the other way around..

In my current lad (no arthritis issues that we know of but is pushing 20) is on progressive earth pro joint and seems to be doing well.
 
I have been looking into this due to Dex's surgery and the cartilage related findings and the best two that have come up (I got ChatGPT to do the analysis for me) were the Science Supplements and Aviform Suppleaze Ultraflex, I have then bought Boswellia from Ebay.
Science Supplements are great but it would have been almost £100 a month to give Dex the recommended dosage and I just don't have room in my budget for it.

Details below, albeit the Suppleaze serving dose is 25g and the Flexability Pro is 117g serving size

I spent a small fortune trying to help my old boy be more comfortable in his old age. My physio recommended Spiller's supple and senior balancer - it's got all of the 'things' in all the correct quantities and a saw a big improvement in Mr B too.

Thank you, thats worth noting. I don't mind adding bits in or doing multiple powders. I could have a look at breaking it up!

If you want the list of multiple powders I use, I’m happy to list them and links for you! Spent absolutely ages looking at so many different supplements and working out dosages and weights and costs per month in a crazy spreadsheet that I’m more than happy to share my results if you’d like by PM!

Please would you be kind enough to send to me! I have just been doing to exactl same exercise- I’ve been through science supplements pro ingredients list and seeing what I can buy as straights for cheaper however so far it seems to be just as expensive! £2.73 per day on the recommended dose!

Also add Rowan Barbary Joint supplement into your search as they have higher levels of the key ingredients and it’s a lot cheaper! https://rowenbarbary.co.uk/supple-plus-advanced-support-html.html

I’ve been using it for about 3 or 4 months with my arthritic mare and it’s great stuff x

BTC that sounds interesting. I would be interested to see what others think. Im using Equimins Flexijoint at the moment more as a preventative than for anything else. Would also be interested on opinions on that.
 
I have noticed that after upping linseed intake my oldies this year 28/26 are so much more supple . They get boswellia also for joints
 
For my two boys I feed the below to help with joints (Baggs has arthritis and Rabbit is more of a preventative cause he's young and growing) :

Turmeric
Boswellia
MSM
Glucosamine
Micronised Linseed
Rosehips

The above supplements also have other uses in the body (such as hooves, digestive etc) which is also why I feed them, but when I was looking for a suitable supplement, I could never find one that had everything I wanted in it. So I figured it would be better to go and buy everything I want separately and then I can also easily adjust the levels if/when I want to. It doesn't suit everyone having 1001 powders etc to mix into feeds but it doesn't bother me as I bulk make my feeds up for the week and store them in an airtight bin, so I only have to look like a witch round a cauldron brewing a potion once a week 🤣

You can’t compare them per gram like that, you have to compare them by the daily serve (which differs per product). They are formulated with different daily serves so the amounts of the active ingredients you have listed should be compared for the daily serve for each supplement. Not for the same amount of grams as that’s not how they are fed

True, but more active ingredients per gram would mean I would need to feed less of it which in supplements of a comparable price would reduce the monthly cost for the required nutrient intake.

This - I did sums from daily servings, but making sure the amount met the actual studied amounts. Joint supplements are really bad for daily serves having lower than proven doses of the expensive bits like hyaluronic acid and chondroitin!

I agree! I use the HA one and mine are still eventing at 18 and 17. Regular physio and that supplement and all is good.

another one who really rates them. I use the plus version with one horse and friend used the HA version. Both horses have arthritis in their coffin joints and both are noticeably more comfortable on it
