As many of you already know I love the Cleveland Bay, but my other rare breed is the Shagya Arab (90% Arabian).

The first foal we bred in France is now 5 years old, not sufficiently 'made' at 4 to jump, he has competed in endurance this year and then had some jumping lessons with a visiting BHS instructor.

I don't have any 'proper' jumps just a couple of home made ones. This week he went to Laurent le Mat for a jumping lesson with proper coloured jumps. Laurent was surprised at this enthusiasm - apparently most young horses take do not like the blue euro fence.

Objective was for him to jump a course of jumps 80cm high.

And here is the other love of my life who is NOT an Arabian.

They're both beautiful horses. The grey looks like he was really enjoying himself. :)

He really loved it. He was worked for an hour and hardly damp at the end. There was a mare in the arena at the same time and he was as good as gold, so we were pleased with him.

He will be with a UK trainer within the next two weeks and spend about three months with him.

Who is he going to Rollin? He really has grown up to be a very beautiful boy hasn't he - and I would be very proud of his ability over a jump too. Can't wait to see more photos as he progresses x

Thank you HBM1

He is going to Steven Franks in near Redhill. NOt much competition in France during the winter and we plan to have him graded for SHGB next March.

I am having a bit of a dispute with Shagya France, he was the youngest stallion to be graded and under their daft rules has to 'perform' within 3 years, this means that next year aged 6 he will have to do 3 x 90km endurance. In Germany for the SAME stud book A he would have to do 2 x90km at aged 7.

Needless to say he WON'T be asked to do that, nor do I want him jumping 1.40 next year. Having said all that, after we taught him to jump he decided to pay our girls a visit and in September we found him in their field - he jumped a 1.30 electric fence and was feeling very pleased with himself.

Really enjoyed seeing all of your pictures, all the best with plans.
JC

Thank you JC. I was going to email you some pics so pleased you spotted this post.

We have just backed his full sister, same colour, 15.3hh but a bit finer in the head. She is now turned away till next year.

Rutland you make me so happy. Most Brits even SJ trainers have never heard of a Shagya. I always ask them if they have heard of Milton or Ratina Z? Yes.

Ever looked at the pedigrees. 50% of horses who competed at the WEG in Germany had Ramzes in their pedigree he was an Anglo-Shagya Arab who sired a dynasty.

I really love these pictures, what absolutely stunning horses Rollin they're just beautiful! If I wasn't up to my eyes in my beloved Trakehners I would LOVE a Cleveland Bay, ah well perhaps that can be the next project in a few years :-)

Love the CB! Very good looking horse. Shagyas are nice horses too. I had a couple of Shagya stallions living on my farm (plus geldings and mares) and they were all very friendly, easy to handle horses; great manners on them all.

Thank you Spring Feather. The CB has just been granted QA status. If we lived in the UK I would get money for that but overseas breeders are excluded from the scheme. Actually the filly foal he sired born this year would have provided us with £400 from the HBLB Premium Scheme but we get nothing!!!

We went in search of a tall Arabian to cross with our Cleveland Bays (another long story) and found the tallest was the Shagya. We visited the Hungarian National Stud at Babolna, spent a weekend there in their hostel, rode the horses, were treated to a two hour drive in a hunting carriage and fell in love. We purchased two brood mares.

The stallions they stand are so friendly, as you say, and so gentle.

The pics above were of our chaps first proper course of jumping, off camera was a SF mare being exercised by the groom. He was such a good boy.

His first foal is due next April

He looks very smart. Glad you've found a suitable placement for him in the UK to go on with his jumping.

I've had a bit to do with Shagyas as a few have been imported to Canada, usually by Hungarians. I even knew a real live Gazal daughter (reg Trakehner) and rode a number of her offspring. Fantastic horses.

Love this boy, and the enthusiasm that he's showing tackling those jumps - making a great shape over them as well! Hope you'll share more pics when you have them. And yes you're right, Shagya Arabs have been a really important influence in the breeding of SJers and eventers, but I remember my own ignorance when I first came across "Shagyar" in the pedigree of the stallion that I was using on my mare - didn't have a clue what it was. The Guinesses (owners of Tamarillo) are great supporters of AAs, Arabs and Shagyars in sport horse breeding in this country.

So nice that you have posted your experience. You would not believe the hassle I have had finding a UK trainer for him. People who never answer their emails or mobiles, think that a 15.3hh Arab won't do anything, have never heard of the breed etc etc.

I had a long career in sales and marketing - and know by ALL by bosses for being like a terrier with a rat - never give up. I have needed it on this voyage.

This boy will be great and his full sister ( now three) will be as good.

One of the (rare;)) times I wish I had my own yard - I would have loved to 'host' him in the UK!

An up-date, my boy is now in the UK. The trainer does not normally accept horses he has not ridden. We wait with baited breath for his opinion. Two weeks to see if he is worth training on.

I understand that he and his partner were surprised - pleasantly, he is so big, yes the breed standard is 15.2hh-16hh. First impressions 'he is a beautiful horse'.

So if he stays and does British Novice, I will keep you posted.

Send him vibes to have Pegasus wings.

So in which county did you send him? Let me know when he will start competing, if not far I will go to see. Uranie is fine, she when back at the stable she was before the summer as in the end the job I have gotten in Hampshire will have an end in March/April as they close most of my department. I started to ride her a bit but struggle with time as far from her. But considering she is very good and learn fast. Hope to work her more from spring.

He is GORGEOUS. Great to see pics of him! What a shame regarding the performance requirements in France. Can he get his approval in Germany or even Hungary instead? Or can he get fully approved when he's a bit older and has some good competition wins under the belt? Good for you sticking to your guns and not pushing him before he is ready. It would be such a shame not to get full approval in his own purebred studbook as he looks like a beautiful young stallion. I really do love the shagya's as they are so versatile and sensible with it, and with that little bit of extra height good for those of us that are a taller :)

Hello,

I did not realise you were back in Italy. He is not far from Hampshire, I will email you. When you are in the UK you can visit. I hope he will start jumping British Novice. I will be over to see him in about 10days.

It is hard when you don't have so much time for your young horses. We have just started debourage for his full sister Antigone and I have two four year old Cleveland Bays also started this summer. I have a French stable jockey to help me now.

I am told by a breeder in Germany that France should change its rules and have heard they may do next year as the requirements are far in excess of other EU states.

I plan anyway to put him forward for SHGB for grading in March. I hope Shagya France will also accept any competition points from UK. He will do more endurance next year.

I am a great believer in the "Really Useful Horse". Woody is a substantial 15.3h but rides bigger if that makes sense?

If you like the Shagya google the Shagya World website - fantastic video of a Shagya doing some great dressage.

Didn't you spend some time in Hungary?

Pleased to hear things are going so well for you and your lovely boy.
Will welcome updates and pictures of course!
(Just about to send off to SIRE , my new horses papers............fortunately due to previous experience, I bought a filly who was already SHBGB registered)
Good luck!

Yes, I lived in Hungary for 3 years Rollin. I am a big fan of Shagya's both professionally (as a vet student) and as a leisure rider as I loved the ones I rode and also had to help with performing procedures on. They have such good natures and try hard to please. One little mare I rode was fab - happy to plod with a beginner making sure they stayed put in the saddle(!) but put a better rider on her she would instantly come to life and give that rider a lot of fun too :)

This will make you smile. My bomb proof Highland Pony arrived here afraid of cows, I have one CB and one Shagya mare, also very nervous with cows.

We lightly backed Woody's full sister, no trotting yet, and took her for a short walk on the leading rein with my 34 year old darling gelding who spooks at nothing.

First time down our drive and along the road she was perfectly behaved, with cattle and neighbour's farm with lots of machinery. Good girl.
