If the health service (in which I work) stopped spending money doing work they should not be doing, e.g. removing tattoos when people decide they no longer want them, breast augmentation because someone is upset because they too small (yes really!) etc and if as a nation, we dealt with the worrying huge class of people who are British born and bred, who have no intention of ever working simply because the don't want to, there would be money for the health service to provide appropriate treatment! And don't even get me started on how many billions on pounds Britain has spent running after the US in the shambles that is the Iraq war - Are we safer as a nation because of it? Of course not, instead we have become a major target for terrorists and we can't afford the drugs people need for cancer and alzheimer's disease.

Speaking as someone who pays shed loads of income tax, I'm not happy about it being wasted either, but its complex and helping some poor souls escape torture is not the problem

Yes there is.
My father died when she was 34,she had 3 children(me 1,brothers 6 and 12) .
Father had been in a very well paid,very stressful job so they certanly could afford us when we were born...different storey after his death-should she not have had any help from the state untill I went to school?


And of course there are the women who dont know who daddy is,only way to find that out and make the father pay would be to test every man in the country....
 
As a single mother (bear in mind this was some years ago) I got £97 a week. On top of that I got £15 child benefit (which each and every child in the country is entitled to regardless of parent's wealth).

Out of that I paid £10 on nappies, £10 baby milk, £10 for council tax, £20 for electricity, £10 gas, £10 water, leaving me £27 for food. The £15 CB would be put aside to pay for shoes or for emergencies. I still had to find money for TV licence etc.

So upon that, I wouldnt EVER have been able to afford a plasma telly (I had a black and white telly and a video player given to me by a friend, and they sat upon a tv stand that cost me £7.99 in the argos sale), but I do know where people on benefits get stuff like this. A place called shopacheque, a company that preys on people on low incomes offering them 'luxuries' and cash loans. You borrow £500, you pay back £1000. So yes, the benefits tax payers are paying for are in effect paying for these luxury items, but if these companies werent about then people wouldnt be able to afford these items.

As i said in my 1st post....if i couldn't afford it, i DIDN'T have it..

of course i had "knockers" pressurising me to take out loans/shopacheck/provident whatever it was/is nowadays...

you don't HAVE to sign up, though eh??

it was difficult/hard whichever way you want to look at it....BUT i had my self esteem...and do you know what???

the thing that cheered me up the most was when i met new people through my job, they would say...."oh, i didn't know you're a single mum"!!!...THAT made me glow inside..as i wasn't lumped into the same sh1t catagory as the wasters...not PC but i didn't/don't give a monkeys.....

As far as your mother is concerned, of course that is a different story, but I'm guessing it wouldn't cost much to support every genuinely married, widowed mother of two or three in the country.

As far as not knowing who daddy is, maybe once that should receive some support. The second time, I don't think so.

Prepared to get shot here, but the second time you have a child with no idea who the dad is (and I mean really no idea, not just for the benefit of the authorities) I think perhaps the child would be better off with one of the long queue of people waiting to adopt babies. Hard but true.

Either this is a conversation about single mums or it isnt... and you stated that IYO they all sit around watching Jeremy Kyle on plasma tellys.

That's rather a sweeping statement, and I posted what my situation was to show that in most instances there is no money for such things. But you know that, you've been there apparently. I'm lucky, I wasnt in that dreadful situation for long, and for me the system was a hand up, NOT a hand out.

It'd be a lovely world if every single mum could be as perfect as some or no-one ever had to claim benefits, but life just isnt like that. To tar everyone in that situation with the same brush smacks of ignorance.
Just because you had the fortunacy of being able to borrow money so you 'didnt have to live on a council estate with THEM' doesnt make you any better than THEM (who are THEY? something you walked in? )
 
Sorry but some people manage to get through undesirable situations and others don't.

JM isn't fortunate (god I hate it when people say how lucky others are! We ALL worked hard to be where we are today!), she had the good sense to try to find a way out and rather than being told how friggin' fortunate she was, perhaps there should be more pats on the back for her and ladies like her.

Well done JM! You, and people like you, should be an inspiration to others, not told you are "lucky".

some people don't have the opportunity to borrow money to 'find a way out', so therefore JM was fortunate enough to be able to borrow money so as she didnt have to live on a council estate.

some people do not have access to childcare... and cannot borrow money for childcare.

Hard work does come into it, but also having contacts, family and friends who are able to help out helps.... to think EVERY single mum in this country who doesnt work is 'lazy' is beyond belief, especially from one who apparently 'been there'.

I don't find someone who has such a low opinion of people who live in local authority housing and of single parents who don't work 'an inspiration'. I find it narrow minded and quite a sad reflection of what people choose to believe.

An inspiration would be someone who is able to see past what they read in the paper, or the stereotype, and able to empathise that things aren't always black and white

What I meant by that is that the estates in Southend, well those two are awful, I did not want to put my children in with those influences. No it does not make you a bad person, I would never and have never said that. Oh and I do not buy or read the sun.
