Shes NOT a thoroughbred!!!!

Actually the thoroughbred is not pure bred either. Same as the warmblood it has mixed ancestry, some of which will be chunky hardy working horses.
Might be further back than the WB but it's still there.

Surely that's the same with any breed of domestic animal? There would have been a starting point before which the ancestors were mixed.

If you want to get techincal then

Przewalski's Horse also known as the Mongolian Wild Horse, or Takhi, is the closest living relative of the Domestic Horse and is in fact the same species.

Arabians are one of the oldest, if not the oldest breeds in the world.

I'd have more upset the other way around - if someone asked if my TB was a warmblood - or worse still an ISH ;) Don't get many of those with a £15K stud fee ;) :D

Yes and from what we know of the TB breed it was Arabians which were the foundation stallions who were put to fast, more elegant native horses; not chunky horses; most likely they were carriage type horses rather than chunky working carthorses.

Arabians are the oldest pure breed. All TB and WB will have Arabian in their bloodlines. Man has mixed many breeds to suit his purpose. We now often refer to many as pedigree (like the TB) when in fact they are cross breeds.

I wouldn't like you insulting a Thoroughbred of mine by calling her an Oldenburg. An Oldenburg is not thoroughbred but a mixed breed

What is the problem? If they called her a carthorse I could understand you being insulted.

Now if you called my "carthorse" a TB or a Oldenburg I would be VERY insulted!

I get very offended when my lovely TB gets mistaken for a warmblood and not just by random people but by vets, back people, farriers etc.

Typical conversation

Is he a warmblood?
No tb
TB x warmblood?
No TB - ex racer
Are you sure?
Yes - shall I get his passport

But then he does have lines that were used in alot of Warmblood breeding.

I had my TB freezemarked a few years ago and another girl at the yard wanted her horse done as well (her horse came from Emma at clipclop traders so it's your typical Irish import)

The Farmkey lady filled in my details and then she asked the other lady what breed her horse was before saying "shall I put Irish Cob ?" Well the owners face was a picture  I can't even begin to tell you how angry she became. I burst out laughing at first then realised she was seriously angry. She couldn't even string a sentence together she was that cross. In the end the Farmkey lady said I'll put him down as Irish and gave me a WTF is her problem look.

I always called that woman 'Fur coat and no Knickers' coz of her airs and graces and that day she proved it :D:D:D

The other month I posted some pics for cc on Ben (1/2 tb, 1/4 connie) someone gave some lovely comments and then rounded it off with the comment: all in all a lovely example of a cob:eek::p:p. I just had to chuckle!

The travelling community round here were utterly convinced that my old Arab stallion (100% Crabbet ) was a Welsh Sec D and repeatedly asked me how much I wanted for "the old Welsh cob" whilst adding that he would "make a good trotting 'orse". He would, too - his extended trot could keep up with most horses' hand canter!

Someone came up to me at a sponsored ride this year and said we've all been admiring your beautiful horse. Ah thank you I said, yes she said we love Connemaras. Um she's a purebred arab actually. I took it as a compliment as obviously the were impressed by her impeccable manners and didn't think arabs could be so well behaved. LOL

on other hand to you i have a tb that is frequently getting called a warmblood she is that well bred and muscly..hahah not that she was expensive but i take it more as a compliment haha that she looks as expensive as a big warmblood:D
but theres nothing wrong with getting mistaken for a tb after all most of them especially those raced have cost the national debt to breed haha.

Spring feather, your quite right, pedigree is the written record.
Not the word I should have used but understood by many to mean pure.

The carriage type horses used to cross with arabians to start the TB breed were not pure bred themselves, and had been refined down from heavier horses.

This is why the TBs can be quite varied. Someone here mentioned they owned a very hefty one, others are very slight.
It's fascinating the way their ancestry still shows itself sometimes, even after hundreds of years of selective breeding, the origional horse is still in there, albeit very diluted.
I am not knocking the TB, I have several. They are a superb animal. I do believe however that breeding them back to the pure Arabian, itself a superb horse, produces the ultimate performance horse. The reason I breed Anglo arabs. Another cross breed.
So, yes, the TB is, after hundreds of years, is as near pure as dammit is to swearing, it is still a cross breed, and one that does contain chunky working stock, many many generations back.

Ribbons - watching the racing today and Hurricane Fly who is a teeny midget thing who makes Ruby Walsh look like an overweight giant was running against another horse, whos name I can't remember, who looked at least half cleveland bay...so I agree that the diversity in a breed is amazing, esodcially one as 'pure' as a TB, and you can't get a lot purer.

I LOVE knobstrap and will never look at a spotty horse in the same way again...

Yeah I hate it when people confuse your horse with a different breed. I'm always getting asked if my traditional gypsy cob is a Friesian....

My teacher has a lovely Fresian gelding, and he was at a local show and the judge couldn't tell what breed he was and asked if he was a Clysdale!! Nothing wrong with heavy horses I used to ride a lovely Ardennes many years ago but to get those two breeds mixed up, I mean come on! And she was judging the class.

I was out hacking with a friend yesterday. We stopped in a gateway on a single track lane to let a lady past in her car, she rolled down her window and said "is that a gypsy horse?". We were most offended
