A few months ago I posted for advice after my mare stopped sweating on one of the hottest days of the year. She'd had a guttural pouch swab and it appeared the perfect storm of high heat, high humidity and a stressed horse (possibly under-sedated, but we'll never know) led to sudden onset anhydrosis - and an enormous vet's bill :(

Its not common in the UK, so most of the research has been done in Florida. I tried a few things (& thanks for advice on here), but nothing worked. Exercising her over summer had to be done in the morning as any later and you could see her veins popping, but no sweat.

Until this week.....

2 things happened this week
- I started her on Equinatural's uveitis herbal supplement
- about 40 odd trees were felled in the paddock near her, which caused all kinds of silly behaviour as they came down.

Yesterday I lunged her and she had one of those mad, bucking, galloping lunging sessions that I get every few weeks or so. But this time we got sweat!:) Absolutely pouring in it too.

Never been so happy to have a sweaty horse! I'm hoping her body has re-set and we'll be back to normal now.

Just spotted this - I had issues with anhidrosis in my horse in Hong Kong. As you say, most of the research is based in Florida and it tends to happen in hot humid countries. I wonder if it will become more common here though with climate change..?!

I got some OneAC shipped in from the US - it's a supplement design to help the issue. The shipping cost more than the supplement! However like your mare it seemed to kick him into normal sweating and he didn't need a second tub. Just letting you know in case the problem occurs again :)

Fatty has anhidrosis he goes through stages of having a partial sweating reponse and stages of complete lack of sweating .
He's lucky he's a hunter if he was required to compete in summer it would have been career ending .

I had a look at oneAC's ingredients in my mad googling and tried her on the same ngredients for a few weeks. Obviously I was guessing at quantities but sadly no effect. Glad to hear yours sorted itself out too - this summer has been challenging!

Has Fatty always had it? Mine definitely sweated properly in the past and this came on really suddenly. I'm hoping we don't revert back because this summer was a write-off. Oddly she's grown a thicker winter coat (already) than I've ever seen on her - no idea whether that was some kind of response to the issue or if we've got arctic weather due in.

Great news! Is it your pony who has metabolic problems? Just wonder if it's all connected in some weird and wonderful way!

That's the one! I've wondered that too. There's definitely something very sensitive about her system. She was hand reared as a foal too which won't have helped. I watched a fascinating programme on how premature babies in incubators struggle with a lack if gut bacteria and have wondered whether that also affected her. Add in the pssm and she's a bit of a mess really!

It's really interesting isn't it (although maddeningly frustrating for us owners). Stan has EMS and is sometimes very intolerant to excercise becoming puffed very easily but then the same amount of work the following day and he won't be puffed at all. He's currently following a rehab plan from hock surgery so his work is regular and timed! Had his heart and lungs checked and they seemed normal so I'm sure it's linked to his metabolic syndrome although I haven't managed to find the specific trigger yet. I had him checked for PSSM too as some symptoms seemed to fit but he was negative.

Im having problems with my gelding not sweating. I’m in Bahrain so will have to import this ONE AC. Can i ask is your horse still sweating? I see your post was a while ago.

Gosh I didn't realise I'd written this but no, sadly she stops sweating every time the temperature and humidity in the UK gets high. So we've had 2 weeks of 20 degrees and she's not had a drop on her.

Her sweating will kick in again around September going on prior years experiences.

Sorry to hear that ? I’m going to try the ONE AC supplement, not sure they sell it here so I’ll have to import. Fingers crossed, I’ll post on here if it works.

I had a welsh cob X arab who didn't sweat. In winter we clipped short as short could be and in summer I would have copious buckets of water and would liberally douse throughout exercise if he was working hard. It was a faff at shows, a bucket had to be taken to the collecting ring.

That was in the 80's and there was no explanation when I mentioned it to the vet, other than, "that's strange."

Here I am bumping up my old post from 2017 - the year the Appy stopped sweating.

Drum roll please.

We have PROPER sweat!! With hint of citronella and deet to add to the sweaty horse smell.

We had patchy bits last summer for which I was extremely relieved given how high the temperatures got but this summer she is absolutely sweating like a normal horse.

In 2021 she had a swollen thyroid and blood tests were 'quirky' so the vet suggested levothyroxine. It did absolutely nothing for her thyroid - we believe that was environmental because it went down within a fortnight of a yard move - but she started to feel a little tacky to the touch that summer. Summer 2022 I could smell sweat and I could see damp patches in her armpits and under her back legs. Today she had to come in for the farrier. Her box is shady but stuffy and she was probably wet and honky when she came out for her trim. I'm not sure the farrier appreciated my enthusiasm.

Levothyroxine can cause excessive sweating in humans so somehow it must have triggered her body into remembering what it supposed to do in hot summers.

I did an absolutely tonne of googling and reading when she first started to struggle and nowhere ever mentioned a thyroid drug so if anyone ever comes across this in a search engine then its worth a try - the cost is worth the reduction in stress in these baking hot summers we're now getting.
