These shetties are so cute!!

I think I'm about to make you very jealous :p

I have recently bought myself 2 shetland colts, a piebald and a dun!! They are gorgeous!

I get them about the 17th November and will only post photos then... I dont want to share photos of them until they are truly mine as I want everyone to coo at them when I actually get them home :p haha!!

So watch this space!!! :D

Varkie, your stallion is a beautiful animal!
Thank you! We think he's rather handsome - as does he! Lol!

Yes, sadly some do go for meat at the sales. We sometimes pick up a couple from the sales if we see only the meat man bidding, run them on a bit & then rehome them. This year we've sadly had to decide that we cannot take on any extras.

It's not just shetlands that go for meat though - it's all breeds. Shetlands, NFs, Welsh, tbs, cobs, etc - some at breed sales, some at the more general horse sales. Even from reputable sales - it's not all from the low end sales either.

This is going to sound odd coming from me as a breeder, but people really need to think harder before breeding. And if they do breed, they need to give more thought to what happens to those foals - too many breeders do nothing at all with their stock, and they are barely handled when sold, let alone castrated or vaccinated or anything else. More breeders need to handle, worm, trim, vaccinate, castrate the majority of colts, etc. There also needs to be an end to foaling a mare every year without thought. We do need to reduce the number of foals coming through. Last year we didn't even cover any mares for foals this year, and only had one born last year, whom we're keeping. This year we've covered only a couple of mares.

I agree. In live in shetland. Went to a sale once. And never again. So awful seeing poor wee colts selling for peanuts to some vile man. Wasn't sure how wide spread it was though. If I was ever tempted to breed. I'd be so careful. Ie how many mares into foal etc. such a lot of waste up here

My lad is 5 now, I've had him since he was 6 months old & he's played the companion role for various horses over the years. He's my only horse now, and kept on livery so that he has some pals :)
Sorry if they're huge I'm on my phone :o

SQUEE!!

I have to say, when I bought a shetland for my 2yr old niece I wondered what the hell I was letting myself in for. We had one years ago, and he was a complete nightmare... commando crawled under the fencing, ran off with brushes and did the rodeo trick if you went near his feed.

The one we have now we bought as "been everywhere done everything", perfect mother's dream. By chance I spoke to the breeder who said (after we used her in the riding school) she was pretty much untouched for the first 16yrs of her life due to her "revolting" temperament. Having been completely oblivious to all that we've never had a day's trouble, and she proved she really is the sweetest, kindest little mare I've ever had! Still hasn't put a foot wrong and we've had her a year now!

However, the one thing she does tend to do is roll when she's on the yard... I could still squish her all day though! I think this should link you to the video evidence, lol

Did you buy her from her breeder? I am in regular contact with the breeder, she is a lovely lady and always interested to hear how her ponies are getting on. Aski is a fantastic lad, very cuddly and sweet and just an all round lovely boy :)

Yes MrsElle still keep in contact with her in fact only spoke to her last week before I went to the Reading auctions. As you said she is a lovely lady and so knowledgeable about Shetlands.

I am loving this thread, so many gorgeous ponies !! It is my fantasy to have a horse to ride plus a pony to drive of my own. For those that keep on livery, do liveries charge less as they're so small ?

Here are my 6month old Mini's, the little bay is Lulu and the coloured is Bella :)
They are a pair of scruffy moo's at the min, need a good brush!

OH MY GOD I WANT ONE!!

I am looking for a companion for my mare as she is not content with horses next door and have found a Shetland available on loan, I really really want one now and even my BF seems quite keen to take a little pony out for a walk :-) I showed him these pictures, both suffering cute overload haha!

I dont have a photo handy, our super shetland is out on loan teaching two little girls to ride. They do all sorts on him. My own daughters learnt all about looking after and riding ponies from him. He "arrived" in the field one christmas, nothing to do with me honest. Hes such a little pony but with a huge character!!
