So, this is the first year that I have had to muzzle the pony as he is just not getting enough work (work too crazy). I have only ever had TBs for years and years so I have no clue at all about muzzles. I tried a full size shires one and it fit (he is in a cob sized bridle?) but I have heard that these are quite small. There is a deluxe version (?) which is bigger?

1. So basically, do I go for the deluxe?
2. If so, which size is closest fit to full size regular shires.

thanks in advance!

I am using the shires old version full size on my pony, I bought a deluxe one and the fitting is different and I think it is bigger and the design is different and pony managed to get it off. In the end I swapped the nice delux muzzle with my friend who I borrowed the old shires one off so she has the new version and I have the old one. They don't make the old ones any more unfortunately.

Huh. That's weird, I've got a 4 year old standard one and a new deluxe and thought they were pretty much the same size (apart from the cut-back design at the back). Perhaps my horse has an odd shaped head :p

I think the bucket part of the muzzle may not be as deep and it is seems wider maybe because of the cut away design?

Yes probably. I think the fluffiness on mine filled up the gap pretty well. Fortunately for me my horse seems quite happy to keep hers on :D

Some websites still appear to have the old stock on (or maybe just haven't changed the photo ) - might be worth phoning round, OP?

Thanks; I ordered the full size deluxe one today and not a day too soon as pony came in with HUGE belly and currently standing in looking sorry for himself. He has been given no food and I am keeping him in until muzzle arrives (although stock not expected until Weds). Might have a hunt around for the old one. Barnstormers said they were the same size with the fluffiness taking up the extra room (I will add more sheepskin if necessary). He was meant to be the nice easy one after years of self harming TBs - he has been more trouble than all of them combined. Currently trying to find scraps of hay in his bed to eat. The thing is quite positively huge at the moment I am not sure where he would fit in any more food!

My deluxe one is the same size as my old shires one (full, on an Arab x pony) and it fits the same although shallower under the jaw, then has the padding to fill the gap. Very happy with it, reduced rubbing no end.
