Just a quickie! I'm about to buy our little man a Shires grazing muzzle, but I'm not sure what size to go for? He's a 12.2hh Welsh Mountain pony - not sure whether to go for 'small pony' or 'pony'?

Also, while I'm here! - how much does a muzzle really reduce grass intake? After many vet visits to try and solve his tummy troubles, we have come to the conclusion that he only gets a dodgy tummy when fresh grass is restricted - and as he has cushings, he spends most of his life in a lami paddock on hay as we unfortunately have very good quality grass where we are.
The vet has advised to put him out with the others on fresh grass with a grazing muzzle for part of the day. But having never really allowed him the freedom of the open fields, I'm not sure how long is a "safe" amount of time for him to be out on it for? x

I would always go for a size bigger (helps stop rubbing).

One of our ponies at the yard has lami and cushings, they keep there muzzles on 24/7 (advised by the vet) but does come in for a munch on the haynet and vits. They look good and hasn't come down with a bout of lami, also I,ve watched them eat and they can get enough grass through so they wont starve.

Agree go size up to reduce rubbing. Shires ones really restrict the grazing by atleast 2/3rds would be my estimate. Greenguard in comparison, restrict by 1/2 (if that).

I've got a 12hh Section A with a small head. Pony headcollars tend to be a bit big on her but I always get a cob shires type muzzle for her as otherwise they are way too tight around her nose.

My cob has one of these - just the regular model though.

He wears a Full, and it fits him fine - he wears a full noseband, and is between cob/full for headcollars. Never had any rubs yet, and the difference in his feet and waistline is noticeable :)

He had been wearing douring the day this year, and last year when he was out all the time, he either wore it all day except for when I was with him, or during the day, and off overnight - depending on amount of grass and how he was looking etc. He has started pulling it off recently though - little monkey

Def go one size up. I have the old one and the new deluxe one and the full fits my Arab x better - I usually have her in a cob size in head collars which are often on the top hole! X

I have my arab/welsh 13.2 in a full size. It looks huge but he wears it 24/7 (nearly) and it doesn't rub. I've added a cord from the headpeice to the nose to stop him rubbing it off.

I find he gets plenty of grass even when it's short - he doesn't lose any weight while wearing it but he doesn't gain weight either.
