I got my mare as a birthday present in February, she arrived in this appalling condition

This is her 4 mths later , clean and muscled up from lots of hill work, have no idea how she was so poor and so dirty before we had her as she hates mud, refuses to get muddy ever and lives on fresh air!!

Awww thankyou, we are finally hacking out and shes not panicking thinking she needs to trot at high speed every where, last 3 weeks she has done 12-15 miles every sat, and hardly broken into a sweat, just need to increase her lung capacity now, she doesn't have much puff for fast work, bless her!

Lovely stamp of a horse: bet she was a demon to clean when you first got her?

Took 2 hot showers, but wasn't all mud, some of it was skin/scabs growing out of the coat, no idea how she got in that state she just doesn't get muddy, poor thing, best I don't know! She was sooooo headshy, our last battle will be to persuade her she likes her legs being clipped, she can be VERY determined:D

She does have the odd impressive rear, but I can avoid them, it's usually because she is confused and panics, best thing to do is sit quietly and ask her really really nicely, if she starts to throw her head, sit quietly a little bit longer and ask again, she does think about it then and do it, if you push her and tell her, she will shoot up. Bless all 14hh of her hehe x

She's gorgeous :)

Out of interest, did you clip her out when you got her? Looks from the pics like you clipped feathers - if so, how long did they take to grow back?

Always curious about other people's hairies :)

She is fine for her body, but fairly dangerous to do her legs, shes not nasty to you, but flicks her legs up and is likely to hurt herself or break the clippers, she was sedated for her teeth in March and had a good close shave then, now 3 mths on, they are half grown out, am trying to get her used to it with an electric toothbrush, but failing miserably!!

She's beautiful. Well done you :) sounds a bit airy fairy I know, but think about clicker training her to have her legs clipped. I find it really useful for strong willed horses that need convincing things are their idea ;)

I don't mind airy fairy, have tried being tough ie twitch, you might as well not bother...... Have clickers trained my dog 15 yrs ago..... What would I do .
? Just touch her legs and when she doesn't move click and treat? X

I think she looks smashing. As to the post of "Visable ribs", where???? The first picture you have of her she looks spot on, ok we know she could do with a touch more muscle, that comes with time we all know that but really ribs? The problem is too many people are so used to seeing way too fat horses they can't tell the difference anymore.
Gosh this sounds a bit ranty, it's not honest!

Not ranty, just a little insulting, she was very very thin with matted coat and mud, i can't abide fat horses, she isn't a sports horse she is a thick set cob, she has only gained muscle as I am strict on her diet and didn't feet her up, just gave her adlib hay and lots of hill work, and now she is eating the grass as it comes throw her field is that bare. Her ribs are visible when shes running around the field, you can count each one, but I am more than happy with that...... now I sound like I am ranting.. you must bear in mind her first photo was February and she had a full woolly coat, funnily enough when I first posted the photo some ppl said she looked just right, but I had the vet see her and he was shocked at her weight too.

She is stunning love her head are you going to show her:D You should she has the head of a duchess and the backside of a cook. You may not get there re: clipping if she was left with mud fever etc in the past they never forget and can stay a little touchy.

UUmm how is my post insulting?? I said she looks smashing. Maybe needs a bit of muscle but like i said that comes with time, its not an instant thing. Then just said too many people are used to overweight horses. If you feel i have insulted you or your horse then i'm sorry as i was actually sticking up for you regards the earlier post of visable ribs. Maybe like you said with a winter coat... but i honestly cant see any ribs in the first picture you posted of her after you have given her a bath.

I apologise i was reading it as you were questioning she had a rib in sight, and probably wasn't clear re the photos, the first photo was when we got her, the photos of her clean are 4 mths later as she is now more or less, although now she has got her summer coat..... not sure if I have a clean photo of her when she was skinny.... will have a look...... X Ps she isn't skinny now, shes perfect x

you mare is really gorgeous! Personally I dont think she looks bad when you first got her at all, just very muddy and lacking muscle. Either way she is lovely and she clearly has a lovely home.

I forgot to add..... shes 5 and had 2 live foals and had lost the 3rd before we had her, and is broken to drive, haven't tried her under harness... could be interesting! Mind you I wouldn't say she was much more than backed regards under saddle..... but hey ho, we are getting there, she learnt how to do gates last few weeks, she thinks she is very clever now and tried to open them herself hehe

Wow, what a difference! I used to loan a rescue mare who also hated to get muddy - it's almost as if they are so happy to be clean and well looked after that they daren't get dirty in case they are left like it again. :(

YES! It's just like that.... she also hates her feathers with a passion, she hates them muddy, she hates them touched, so why won't she let me get rid of the bloomin things!!!!! lol x
